I have this problem where every time I find a name that I really like, a relative uses it for a pet. Would you cross those names out or still use them? It's so frustrating because I've had this particular girl name picked out for over a year and my Aunt just used it on her cat.

It depends on the relative. My sister's dog? Yeah that's definitely our. An aunt I see a could of times a year, not such a big deal. I actually just realized my aunt used to have a dog named Max and that is my nephew's name now.

I have an aunt who used the already chosen and announced name of another aunts unborn child for her dog. So, for a few years, we had a Sadie dog and Sadie baby/kid... Sadie the human is in college now and the dog passed.
My sister keeps naming her pets popular names. It's an annoying habit for sure!

Only if it were someone I saw all the time, like my mom or sister (who I see every week). Outside of that, I probably wouldn't let it sway me.

My grandmother has a cat with my kid's name, and obviously I used it anyway. My kid will be around a lot longer than her pet, and it has been my favorite since childhood. It hasn't been an issue.

I thought I'd be ok with using a name a family member used on a pet but the more I thought about it, the more uncomfortable I became. H's sister has a cat with a name I love for a little girl but the cat is horribly mean (and the name is getting more popular) so it would be an uphill battle changing H's mind on that one

My DD2 has the same name as the dog of a close friend. I thought it might be weird but I loved the name so I didn't care. And it hasn't mattered at all.

I wouldn't rule the name out. I didn't realize it until after LO was born but LO's name rhymes with and sounds similar to my uncle's dog's name. Whenever we get together someone (often me or DH) ends up calling LO the dog's name. It's no big deal but it would probably be less awkward if they had the same name.

My husband's brother and his wife named their kid our dog's name. We've had the dog for ten years and he's totally a part of the family, lol. They loved the name, though (it's a common name) and didn't want it to affect their choice!
I salute their decision, though it's been VERY confusing for my daughter.

Our girl name this time around is my MILs dogs name. We didn't like anything as much so we were willing to go for it figuring the kid would be around a lot longer than the dog!

I'd still use them. We gave our son the name of my in-laws cat, and I don't care at all.
The cat technically uses a nickname of my son's name (think Ellie instead of Eleanor as an example) but all of a sudden they're always calling her "Eleanor" instead of the usually used "Ellie" which is annoying.
When we named my son, we lived far away, and I didn't even think about it. I still don't care much- it's just a cat and it was my favorite name by far, so why would I let that ruin it? The only people who know are immediate family, and only my husband really jokes about it .

@mrsmacandcheese: This is exactly what my BIL and SIL said. Ha! (Sad day for my ten-year-old dog....but still true.)
