does everyone really go off the meanings? what if you loved the name but hated the meaning?

I did because it was important to me. Growing up whenever we wrote "what does my name mean" essays in school I never had a good reason. So it was important to me that the meaning of their names mean something. If I didn't like the meaning I honestly moved on.

we love the name and the meaning. but we probably have used the name regardless of the meaning.

What if the name has special meaning to you and your SO, but the "official" meaning of the name is just meh to you? I personally would rather go with an emotional connection to the name.

We wanted a name that we both liked and had a nice meaning. If we hadn't like the meaning, we probably would have looked around a little more.

We wouldn't use a name if we hated the meaning...I was probably willing to be more flexible on it, but DH was very strongly opposed to any name that didn't have a meaningful meaning.

There were a few names we liked but the meanings kept us from choosing them. For example, I really love the sound of Cecilia, but it means blind and I couldn't really get past that. {Again though, love the sound ... don't meant to offend anyone with that name!! :)}

Our meaning meant nothign to me, it actually means "son of Emery" and she's a girl. Didn't care loved the name!

@rrachael: That bothered me too...and then I read somewhere that it really means "blind to one's own beauty"? I could be wrong about that though?

I don't think it would matter to me if I REALLY loved the name. My name means 'bad omen' - so it obviously didn't matter to my mom!

I might use a name in spite of its meaning if I loved it, but I would definitely prefer a nice meaning. I always loved that about my own name. The name we have in mind for a second LO has a meaning related to DD's, which I think would be neat.
Also, I know meanings can change somewhat over time, but one of my pet peeves is when people make up or claim a more preferable meaning. Just own that you liked the name! @spaniellove: I think that's what's going on with that definition. It's like vanity sizing for names
