Tell me that I"m not the only one out there naming my child a specific name because it sounds "pretty" versus having some deep emotional meaning associated with it, please?

We picked our LO's name with no emotional association or history. It sounded good and looked like him.

All my favourite girl names are on the list because they're pretty. You're not alone!

Me! I would tell you a name we picked out when/if we have a girl....but we are keeping it a secret from the whole world until we have a girl But I picked it because it's beautiful, and no one I know is named it. (Haven't seen any Hellobee-r with this name yet either!)

The name we chose for our DS was comprised of family names but two names on our girl short list were chosen because they sounded pretty (and met our other criteria as well

I picked DS's name because I always liked it. No other connection or meaning, etc.

You're definitely not the only one! But from the other side...my parents gave me a name they just liked, with no family history or meaning, so every time I've been asked about it, I've had to give that answer. No big deal, but it made me want to make sure my baby's name had more meaning than mine...but that I also thought was pretty!

we picked ds' name because we both liked it. no other reason!

"whew" =)
@mrsbrewer, the name we finally picked is a big secret till my girls born honestly, it's because i'm a bit embarrassed about the name association (it's a name you hear on a very popular tv show!) But i absolutely love it.... *biting nails* it sound so pretty!

Me! I loved her first name, it has no family/emotional connection.
Actually if I'm honest, we named her after an onery girl in Target who was being yelled at by her dad for running up and down the aisle. I fell in love with the name then! haha

We have done first names that we love how they sound, and middle names with family connections. We love the history of the family names, but didn't want to feel too tied down with first names, and I think it's worked out great!

We picked DS's name because we liked it. There's no family attachment at all.

Here! My DH picked her first name becausse he thought it was pretty. Her middle is a family name.

DH doesn't even know this, but the girl name we have picked out is one I read on a blog and really liked it, so I said, what about ___? He liked it, and we've been sold every since.
For middle names I like them to have some meaning, like being named after family, but I sort of work backwards from what sounds good and apply some meaning to it. Totally cheating.

We just like our sons name ! His middle name has family ties but the name we will call him was just our favorite !
papaya / 10570 posts
Nope, we're picking names because we like them, too! Come on, if your nan was called Nellie, what would you do?!!

Our girls all have names that we thought were pretty for their first names. The older 2 have middle naames with meaning and LO has a middle name that I wanted as a first name that DH vetoed.

LO's name happens to be a derivation of my GMIL's name but that's not why we picked it. We just liked the name! But her middle name is my grandmother's name which we did on purpose to honor her.

We picked DS's name because we liked it, no long history or back story involved.

ah - thank you everyone for your feedback! im so happy im not the only one i was starting to feel bad that i didn't have a more "meaningful" rationale for the name I picked...
@mrsbrewer - i almost told you the full name - i had to delete what i wrote (im obviously not very good at keeping secretes)! =)

We picked my dds first and middle simply because we liked the way they sounded. No meaning!

@juliekim: I'm even less deep about how we picked the name-- there was a little girl I knew named Jodie and I thought she was so cute, so that name was a favorite of mine PURELY because that little girl was so cute. I'm not even in touch with that family any more but my love for the name stuck! I wanted my daughter to have a more formal full name so we picked Josephine. We loved how it sounded and I don't even really know what it means...!!

Nope! Not alone! If LO is a girl her name will be Kaia. Why? Because we think it is pretty. Now her middle name, Lynn, is a family name but if I didn't think the combo was pretty, she wouldn't get getting the name. If LO is a boy he will have a family middle name because it is important to DH but the first name will be something we find pretty. Leaning maybe toward Amory... not 100% yet though.

Our name has no special meaning-it's pretty and feminine and classic and that's it!!

@Cherrybee: Nella! You should check out Enjoying the Small Things blog, her daughter is named Nella
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Me too! Both her first and middle name were purely picked out bc we thought they were pretty names...turns out there are so many great aunts, etc with her first and middle name on both sides of my husband's family.
I totally understand picking a name for family history/tradition but sometimes I feel sorry for some babies with the strangest names...

Finding a name that you like is hard enough, it being pretty is as good as any! Congrats! We specifically wanted DD to not be a namesake, so we passed on a more emotional/meaningful name because of it and picked one without any ties or connections. We think it's pretty
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@Mrs Hedgehog: Kaia! That's a great name. I like that.
@MrsTiz: Nella is a great name.
Girls names are so much easier than boys...
Oh, and yes, totally picking names because they are pretty. I'm actually staying away from family names because I want my LO to have their own name. Middle names can be for family ties.

We picked LOs name because its pretty, and then we looked up the meaning and its great too!
pomelo / 5000 posts
This is how we'll pick out names. I say them over and over again out loud. The middle name may be based on family history, but the first is all about the sound of it for me!
