Last year the B. Toys drum was a big hit at the little girl's first bday party. What should I get this year?
The party is next Saturday. We have Prime, but I'd love an excuse to visit Target. The two year old stays at home with her mom. Are there any good interactive gifts you can think of they could enjoy together? The only other thing I know is that the little girl hated swim classes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: just as a side tea parties aren't girly - My DD's 6yr old "boy" friends love them as much as her! Heck even my 8yr old DS asks for a cup of tea when DD is playing

My daughter really loved receiving a set of simple hand puppets at that age. They were animals (Melissa and Doug, I think) and I thought at the time that they would be a great gift for someone I didn't know well.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: wooden play food sets. Melissa and Doug make an ice cream cone set and a pizza set - you can make up a cone or a pie with your pick of toppings and serve. It's kinda like a tea party but more gender neutral and still interactive to play with mom.

What about art supplies? I feel like you can never have enough and there are so many cool things out there to explore.

@looch: Yes and its great for people wanting to reduce clutter in the house. Use the art supplies up and then they are gone and out of your house!

DS will be 3 in September - he adores anything related to his play kitchen, including a tea set. He love to set the table, cook us food, etc... he used to use empty boxes to "pour us drinks" which is why he got a tea set for the holidays.
I know not every little one is as into the kitchen as he is, but we love it.
Another clutter-free idea is a subscription to National Geographic Little Kids or similar magazine. You can pick one up at the bookstore to give in person, with a note explaining the subscription since the first issue won't arrive in time. DS LOVES when he gets one in the mail, we read it a few times, he rips it apart, and we recycle it.
Also: for summer, maybe a big set of sidwalk chalk with tons of different colors? and some bubbles too for fun outdoor play?

kitchen stuff, duplos, play doh set, dress up stuff (occupations, not just princess-y stuff), doctor kit. my kids also really love the melissa and doug ice cream set.

DH weighed in with what he knows about them. They aren't tea party people, they like stuff (I still love the magazine subscription suggestion though), and the play food ideas may hurt their feelings. We're going with magnatiles (apparently he's heard of these) and sidewalk chalk!

Magnatiles are awesome and even if she has them you can never have too many!
Also bubble machines are great!
