For sure after. There tend to be easter egg hunts and seasonal activities the weekend before around us.

In your case I would do it after Easter. My older son's birthday sometimes falls near Easter so we do it after.

After- even people who aren’t very religious will often get together with family for Easter, plus the egg hubs and such.

Plus I prefer to have the party after the actual bday. We have a quiet family only celebration the day of, then the party is still something to look forward to after. If we do the party bwfore I always feel like the actual birthday is anticlimactic.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Because my son's birthday is December 16th.

I can squeeze the friends party in either the first week of December, or I have to wait until well into January. By then, it's just too late.

@Foodnerd81: It only sucks for me in terms of planning. I have to get the venue and the invites out early, because people have a ton of things going on, like seeing the nutcracker, tree lightings, etc.

Then there is the week break between Christmas and New Years and while it seems like a great time to have a party because kids are bored, there are a ton of people that take a vacation during that week.

Neither I or anyone close to me is religious but I would still not plan anything for that long weekend. Many of us plan trips out of town around it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would choose the weekend before because most of my friends participate in all the easter hunt activities of the easter weekend. I wouldnt want to compete with that

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: oh no that's just my personal preference. I always like to share birthday pictures on their actual birthday so I lean towards birthday festivities before, but I have also done then the weekend after too
