I am looking to get a bike with training wheels for DD1 for her 4th birthday.

I would pay close attention to the bike's weight. The first training wheel bike we bought for DS was SUPER heavy, I don't know how much it weighed, but I had a really hard time picking it up and carrying outside/down the street to the park, which made me not want to take it out very often. I think it also made it hard for him to ride and he didn't use it much. When we bought a new, bigger bike with no training wheels, we got one that was extremely lightweight (about 16lbs) and he learned to ride it quickly and doesn't have any trouble pedaling it.

@regberadaisy: I was just about to post the same question! DD was talking about her old trike that we've lent to her cousin because it's too small for her. She has a scooter now, but I think it's time for her to get a big girl bike.
What size wheels are you thinking about getting? I'm undecided between a 16" or 20" wheels. But I want training wheels. I remember reading up on kids' bikes a few months ago and they said the essential features are 1) weight and 2) the position of the seat. They argued that the well-known and expensive bike companies normally use the same parts they use for an adult-size bike and it's way too heavy for children. The seat placement had something to do with the center of gravity and how it shouldn't be too high up. I have to dig out that old article. I'll post it here later.

@SugarplumsMom: 16". I remember buying one for my niece and nephew around this age and went with a 16". I need to go to a bike store or Toys R Us to scope out the sizing but I think 20" might be too big for an average 4 year old?

@regberadaisy: @SugarplumsMom: My son's bike is a 16" and it's rated for 5-7 years, from 41" to 49". The 20" bike from the same brand is rated from 49" to 53". Depending on the frame, I would likely go with the 16" bike for a 4yo.

Have you considered not using training wheels? Kids typically tend to learn to ride quicker without training wheels.

@alphagam84: thanks but she has really bad balance so I'm not considering a balance bike. I think she will be more comfortable starting with training wheels.

@lamariniere: What 16" bike did he get? The lightest I've found so far is 9.2 kg.

@SugarplumsMom: it's an Austrian brand called Woom. They are a bit pricey, but have a really amazing trade up program if you trade up sizes within 2 years.
