I just got my "Late Pregnancy" packet of info from the Dr at my last midwife appt. I'm delivering at a hospital, and I'm having a boy this time around. In the little packet of info, it says to talk to you babies Dr about the circumcision before delivery........So does the Ped perform it?? Is there someone else at the hospital that does it? I know I can ask my midwife at the next appt, but I was just wondering who performed it in your experience?

Usually the hospital will do it, unless you prefer to have a moyle do it. Some pediatricians offer it in office as well. Figure out your preference and it should be easy to set up.

A pediatrician usually does it, but they do it at the hospital, and it wasn't my LO's pediatrician that did it - just one of the on-call ones.

At our hospital the OBGYN does it because they are surgeons and the pediatrician isn't.

So interesting! It sounds like it depends.....hmm....I just asked my friend who delivered at the same hospital, and she said her OB did it. That just seems weird to me! but I guess like @RonjaL7: said, they are surgeons too so it would make sense!

Is it bad that I don't know? The nurse took him and brought him back and gave us care instructions. The ped checked on it, but I don't know who actually performed it.

We hired a mohel to do our son's at our house. My DH read up on the differences on how hospitals do it vs how a mohel does it and decided he wanted the mohel. Plus that's literally the only procedure a mohel does so we both felt more comfortable with it.

My OB would have done it, but we had to postpone it a few months. A pediatric urologist did DS'.

@MrsTal: Interesting. Was it expensive to have a mohel perform it? Or does it still go through insurance then? One more stupid question, do you need to be Jewish to have them perform it?

Our pediatrician did it in the hospital.

My OB did it in her office. I had the option of having it done at the hospital by my OB.
During my prenatal pediatrician consult our LO's first pediatrician wanted absolutely nothing to do with circ. He said he was not a surgeon.

@MrsBrewer: we're Jewish and had a bris in our home. A mohel did it for us, however his day job job was as a urologist but he did circumcisions as a mitzvah for the Jewish community.

My hospital has a specific surgeon come in and do it. They just asked me after delivery if we wanted it. They did it next day

An OB did it for both boys. As others have said, OBs do a lot more surgery and stitching than peds.

We had the option between my OB or our pediatrician (both of whom would have done it at the hospital the day after birth). My OB is a woman and the pediatrician is a male so my husband wanted the ped to do it because "he'll have more concern for the penis"
I didn't have a strong preference and my son was my second child so we'd been working with our pediatrician for 3 years already so I love and trust him completely. In the end I'm very glad we picked our ped because of course I went in to labor 2 week early and my OB was flying out of town to visit family so I was delivered by the on call OB. She was great for delivery, but was clearly anti circ and I would have been uncomfortable with her performing it.

@MrsBrewer: we had a mohel do it also, we were more comfortable with the whole process that way. We paid cash and did not bill our insurance. We are not Jewish, in Dallas there is a rabbi who has made it a business to do non-Jewish children as well and has a good reputation. he actually has a website if I can find it that talks about why you might want a mohel.

@MrsBrewer: I had to call my husband to ask about how much it was because I couldn't remember. He thinks it was $150 and then we paid more on top of that because the guy was so great. I think we could have submitted it to insurance because he was licensed but we just never did. Definitely don't have to be Jewish, our guy said that probably 50% of his business aren't.

FYI - I would DEFINITELY ask who will be performing the procedure. I delivered at a teaching hospital, and it's usually the interns/residents who draw the short straw to do it. Rotating residents in different specialties, family med residents, etc. I have a family med doc friend who has done a ton, and it's a relatively easy procedure IF IT GOES RIGHT but it's going to have lifelong implications for your son. Make sure you're informed before they go in. They don't have to be a surgeon to perform the procedure.

The on call pediatrician looks at it and then the OB does it bc they're surgeons (was what I was told). It didn't matter bc he had to have a specialist do it at 10 months.

@MrsBrewer: I think a mohel is good to consider if you are uncomfortable with the procedure as I was. A mohel has super experience since they do these constantly (obviously you'd have to research your specific one). And at a bris they're doing it with an audience so they're used to trying to minimize distress to all involved. Also I liked that we could hold him for the procedure. I looked away, it was done and I could nurse him right away. This is such a personal thing, so I'm not trying to push it on you but I feel like you don't often hear about it as an option so wanted to give a few details.

@mrsbrewer our mohel (he is also a practicing ob/gyn, so, a surgeon) used a local anaesthetic in the baby's thigh first, so that the procedure was not painful. he doesn't take insurance, but we were able to make the claim with insurance and then they covered it.

OB, first son's was at the hospital, day after birth. 2nd son there was a delay with some insurance paperwork so it was done after we discharged, at her office.

We also had the option to have the pediatrician in the hospital complete it or seek outside. We choose a mohel as well by recommendation of our midwives. In the end (this was our first child) it ended up being a better option for us. W was 2 weeks old so we had gotten use to diaper changes, learned his cries a bit and adjusted. We have his follow up appointment next week.
We billed insurance and it was $234 (we have a $250 deductible per year). The mohel also offers out of pocket cost which were nearly $800-but we live in the PNW so we get his by some higher costs.
W is healing perfectly and I wouldn't have done it any other way!

Our pediatrician did it in his office. We talked about it ahead of time (we already saw him for LO1) and he gave us he option of the hospital (he has privileges) or the office. He suggested the office because it gave the baby a little more time to adjust to being on the outside and there was a lower co pay with insurance.
Our ped has been in practice for 30 years and has done a million so I totally trust him. I watched the whole thing and it was very interesting. We had no issues.

The pedi at the hospital did it. Not ours because our pedi doesn't have privileges at the hospital I delivered at, so we just had one assigned by the hospital for our stay (uncomplicated full term delivery.)

Although we are Jewish, we didn't want to do a bris. My OB did it in the hospital. I'm fascinated that non-Jewish people use mohels -- who knew?!
