We are renovating a house and TTC#1. Our kitchen will have a large island where we will eat most of our meals. We both like a fancy countertop edge (waterfall design), and now DH is concerned this will be problematic with children. He thinks this will put kids a little further from the "functional" countertop. I don't think this is a big issue, but realized that a highchair might not be as tall as the island. What things should we consider now to prevent challenges down the road? Thanks!

Still waiting on LO, but we are listening to our friends and getting a Chicco 360 hook on high chair. They make several types of hook on if you don't like the 360. We have only counter height tables and a breakfast bar as well on our island and we wanted something to work anywhere. Don't let a baby hold you back on your kitchen style. Good luck!

we don't have a table at all and just have a big island counter that we eat at. I could only find one free standing high chair that went up to counter height- the boon flair. We went with a hook on high chair so she would be right at the counter with us. I have heard that some hook on chairs won't work with some types of counters but we didn't have a problem with ours.
(We have a chicco 360 hook on chair and it's ok). -
With a waterfall edge there is no counter to hook on to though. Will you have deep enough of a lip on the other side for a hook on chair?
If you are planning on using a high chair then it doesn't matter what kind of edge you have because you can use the high chair tray? If you are planning on the kids eventually sitting at the counter and eating I think a counter height is not as conducive to them being independent. And there will come a time they want to climb on and off the chair by themselves!We had a counter height dining table and got rid of it. We have a regular height table now and it's much more comfortable and easier for my 3 year old to get on and off.

Not quite the same, but we had a bar height table and used a hook on chair with our first LO. However, by about 20 months, he was too big for it and no high chair was tall enough to reach and our bar stools were not conducive to a toddler sitting on them. After considering all the options, we ended up cutting the table legs shorter, so now it's a normal height table and we have a normal high chair.

We used to eat most of our meals at the counter, but it's so much easier to eat at the table with DS. Will you not have a table at all? If you really want to all eat at the counter, I'd get stools with backs on them and use one of the seats that secure onto the chair.

@ShootingStar: @HLK208: good point. We have backless stools and they really fit best in the room (one open kitchen and living room) but a sturdy stool with a back would work with one of those high chairs perfectly- with and without the tray.

Is there a table for you to eat at? Or is the island the only place to eat?
As others have mentioned, there are challenges to eating at counter height or bar height with small kids. When LO1 was a baby, our kitchen table was bar height. When LO1 was a toddler, we got rid of the bar height table and bought a regular sized table because it wasn't working at all anymore. If we used the booster pushed up to the table (without the tray), she would push her feet against the table and the chair would tip backwards (obviously unsafe). She also would try to climb the bar height chair to get into her seat, which wasn't stable enough for her to climb.
