I said something similar- sometimes grownups like to make themselves look a little different, the way we wear different clothes or nail polish, because it’s fun. I don’t wear make up very much, mostly just to cover my dark circles, but my 4 year old seems to accept this. Like you I didn’t want to make it like I have to because my face doesn’t look good enough without it. Hopefully it was the right answer.

@crazydoglady: that's what I say too. I don't wear a lot of makeup, and usually it's just if I'm going out. My kids are fascinated and want to know why, and I say it's just for fun, like putting on a party dress. I also try to be gender inclusive and say "guys and girls" like to wear it because my son likes to have his toenails painted, and we live in a place with "ladyboys" who we occasionally see when out and about.

My son has asked and I just say oh I like to wear it! He hasn’t asked again and I wear it daily. He likes to put lip chap on and play with my brushes.

i call it 'decoration'. haha... i only wear makeup about once a week, usually for something slightly more special - date night, church, a party. they get that we make decorations for similar types of special events to make things look different/more colourful.

I tell my three year old that sometimes I like to wear it for fun. She has also seen me leave the house plenty of times without any makeup on.

I let her play with it to make it less of a big deal. Like I’ll let her use my powder and eye shadow brushes on her own face after I have used them myself.

I like makeup and I wear it most days, so there isn’t really a way to hide it from her.

I don't wear it everyday so when I do its to be fancy - then she wants to be fancy too so she gets clear lip gloss and tells everyone how fancy she is - lol

My son asked about it recently, I told him that it was another way that a person can express their creativity.

Wow, I wonder if my 3 year old will ask! She loves watching me do my make up (I barely do anything), and she likes to use the beauty blender on herself and then announce that she's done with her make up

I think I'll probably go with the "just for fun" or for "decoration", since I don't do it on a daily basis.

Hmm, good question. Recently my son noticed my face was a little different after putting make up on, but he didn’t see me apply it. I would probably tell him it’s something fun that only mommies get to do. Then, I would redirect him in applying lip balm, which is something we let him do.
