My LO is starting daycare this week, and they are asking for a copy of his birth certificate. Is that normal?

I don't think so? However, that is only based on my experience with two centers.

We've been to three daycares and I haven't provided a birth certificate. Is it to verify birthday for adult:child ratios?

We didn't have to supply one. Did they give a reason why they need it?

I did for preschool and elementary school.

Might depend on your state and the type of daycare. We're in Indiana and my daughter was at a fairly large daycare center. We had to provide a copy of the birth certificate and they said it was required by the state.

We had to provide one--it's a state law in Virginia.

Thanks, everyone! I'm in Illinois so maybe it's state law here too. I was just a little worried since obviously there's a lot that can go wrong if someone gets a hold of it who shouldn't have it.

@Chuckles: I'm in Illinois and I don't remember having to supply it.

Also, in Illinois. We just started daycare and they required a copy of DS's birth certificate. It is a DCFS requirement.

Our preschool didn't ask for it.
@Chuckles: birth certificates are public records so anyone would be able to get a copy from the state.
