at 18 months, LO probably had about 10 words. i was a little worried about it, especially since he was not pronouncing a lot of words correctly ("guh" was "dog", for instance). i went back and forth in my mind about whether to get him evaluated, because while he was on the slower end, i didn't want to complicate things if he didn't really need therapy.

by his 2 year appointment, he had about 50 words. i was still in the mode of counting his words because his vocabulary was small enough, but since he had progressed and was continuing to say new words, i let it be. he's now 3.5 years old and no speech issues.

just some perspective from someone who ended up not doing speech therapy evaluation for a slow-to-speak child.

We started speech for N at around 18 months because he had odd mouth movements. E started speech only at just after two. Although he has been in feeding/speech therapy since about 13 months.

Our ped suggested it at 15 months. It took another month before we could get an appointment with our EI case manager. She was evaluated at 16 months and began therapy a week later.

I just emailed my pediatrician last week with this concern. LO is 21 months and she seems behind the others at her daycare class. The pediatrician didn't seem concerned so I'm just going with it. I can tell that she's improved and her skins are becoming clearer.

@sorrycharlie: if you're worried and looking to round out the picture, I can send you the age-relevant pages of the Rosetti scale DD's therapist used for evaluation. They look at a much wider skill set than I'd realized when evaluating language delay.
