We are having three large trees majorly pruned today. Do I tip the crew? (it's fairly expensive, so I say no??? ... but I personally know the arborist and I wonder if we got a little friends & family discount)

If the business owner is doing the work himself, no tip. If he has a crew working for him, I would tip them (assuming you are pleased with their work).

Eek...I've never tipped for something like this. Whether it's tree pruning or landscaping. The crew is sometimes here and gone without me even knowing. I wasn't aware that this was expected in either industry.

@2PeasinaPod: The email from them said, "There's no need for you to be home." - which makes me feel less bad about not tipping ... because if I worked out of the house, I wouldn't have even seen them.
I'll be sure to leave a wonderful review on Yelp, Angie's List (if they're on there), and our Nextdoor.com recommendations.

I'm in camp "tipping has gotten out of hand". If you want to be nice, offer drinks (especially if it is hot) and if they're there all day, you could volunteer to order pizza/subs for the guys to have for lunch (I realize it's a little late for that now!)

@littlejoy: Phew...I'm glad most of the responses are no! I was worried that I was being really rude by not tipping!

@alphagam84: @PinkElephant: We have been renting for 6+ years, so I haven't ever used a service like this before ... I wasn't sure if tipping was the standard (because like you mentioned, it seems like people tip for everything). Thanks for the advice. And, it's only 11:30 here, so lunch could totally work!

@littlejoy: If they are someone you're going to see regularly (like a landscaper who mows your lawn weekly, does spring/fall clean up on your yard, and shovels your snow in the winter)....then maybe a holiday bonus. But not a tip each time.

I'm in a different country on a different continent where tipping is not a thing culturally but we always supply crews with hot freshly brewed coffee incl. some milk and sugar aswell as some chocolate, gummy bears or cookies

I've never tipped an arborist, and we've used their services several times.
