Damien Echols from the West Memphis Three is being interviewed on a talk show right now. The case is of local interest to me, so its one of the cases I follow.
What court cases or legal matters do you follow in the news?

I was following "the blade runner" case for a while.
And last year that psycho Jodi Arias, ::shudder::

i don't follow any regularly but certain cases i'll think of every so often and google to find out if there have been new developments, etc. i know a girl who was murdered last year (acquaintance, facebook friend) so i often search for any news about it.
also paul bernardo was recently in the news because he is getting married... that all happened not too far from me and he is a legit monster so i often look up things about him and karla homolka.

@loki: Is he still in prison? Karla remarried, has three kids, and lives on a Caribbean island with her lawyer's brother (her husband).
@TheSwissWifeStyle: Have you seen the Lifetime movie about her? I get sucked in and watch it whenever it's on.

I'm pretty curious (is that the right word?) in the missing marine's wife case going on. They recently found a teen in NH after a long disappearance, but have not released details yet - just charged the creeper that was apparently holding her. I've been interested to see what happens there. poor girl.

@cascademom: No, didn't know there was one! I'll have to try and catch it when I'm in the US.

Mainly just the big local and regional ones. I'm following the Bob McDonnell case, but it makes my stomach turn.

@cascademom: oh ya paul bernardo will neeeeeeeeeeever get out. but he somehow found a 30 year old lawyer and convinced her he is innocent (he's not) and that he's getting out in three years (he won't). he is charming and terrifying. i'm fascinated by the whole thing. and ya karla makes me sick and it disgusts me that she has children. i don't believe for a second she's rehabilitated. she is just as ill as paul bernardo is. blech.

@loki: Their whole story is just so sick and fascinating. Karla being free is one of the most crazy justice system failures ever. I can't imagine what it's like for her children.

Jodi Arias was the last case that I followed.

Sometimes local things. Like ray nagin (former mayor) being sentenced to ten years. Or the bourbon street dancer whose body parts washed up in the Mississippi.

I'm actually closely following the case in Atlanta where the guy left his kid in the car. He was from my hometown, so I know people who know him.

I don't, generally. I've had cases reported on by local media and I know how much things can get twisted so I sort of just don't trust any reporting of cases.

@rachiecakes: I'm glad it's not gonna be televised at least.
I followed the Casey Anthony trial and it made me so mad with our justice system that I can't follow court cases anymore.

I followed the George Zimmerman trial and I've been following Justin Ross Harris' case.

The West Memphis three case has been an obsession these past few months. I think it is because it went on for so long and I feel like I just stumbled upon it. My husband thinks I am nuts since I have been taking books from the library and watching old movies. I just can't seem to understand how this happened but the more I read and think back to that time in my own life I see how it could be possible.

@Mrs.ThinMint: I am in Atl, so I will be following this one as well.

@rachiecakes: So close to home for you
@Ms.SK: I became interested because I waited on Damien Echols's wife every week when I was in college. She used a different last name, so I had no idea for MONTHS!

@grizz: well he was very lucky to have her. They have a new book out that has their letters when he was in prison. It is told as a love story.

@Ms.SK: I would love to read that! She was so incredibly kind when she came in.

Following the case the law professor, Dan Markel, who was shot in his garage in Florida a few weeks ago. He was a friend of a friend. He had 3 and 5 year old boys. Some theories right now are pointing to the ex-wife's parents. So sad.

I had no idea the west memphis 3 was being discussed recently? It's not local to me and I've only read books about it, so I'm not aware as to the current state of that case.

@septca: I do, too. Glad I'm not the only one! Things are looking generally grim out there. . .

@.twist.: I think its come back up nationally because of the book publicity. Their appearance on Katie Couric's talk show was based around that.

@yoursilverlining: Yep. My best friend is assigned to one for her pro bono work and it's been really interesting to her about her experiences on the road.

@grizz: aaah. Interesting. I read devil's knot in and around 2006, along with some online readings. The recent evidence found is insane and kind of makes me ragey. I feel for those boys. I also (just now looked) and had no idea they had been released which is sad, and awesome. Sad that they spent so much time and have no idea what the world is like now. Awesome because, well, they should be free, IMO.
I'm so not with the current times and didn't even know there was a new book! I might have to check it out.

@septca: @septca: Agree. The new law that prosecutes moms who take drugs while pregnant also really scares me. I fear its only going to lead to avoidance of prenatal care and abandoned babies. I'm already starting to see a trend at work ...

@loki: @cascademom: those two are complete sociopaths. I only knew bits and pieces of the story growing up because I was still a preteen when it was all happening. I read up about it later on and they make me sick.

@MrsTiz: A very close family friend of ours is heading up the jury pool for this case. She's been working on it for months because it's not a simple court case by any stretch.
pear / 1787 posts
@.twist.: i'm not sure if it actually happened already but i heard it was going to. his fiancee has "paul's girl" tattooed on her. vomit.

@loki: oh god. that is wretched. She must not be sane because I'm not sure who in their right mind would marry him....
