I think we did for my bachelorette party. There were six girls, we told them four.

Maybe my moral compass is broken, but I would put 2 with no problem. They will do zero extra work for 2 additional people. It makes no sense to charge extra for more people in the same room.

If it was for a bachelorette party I might. Now with LO I don't because we often use the portable cribs that the hotels offer, so I don't want to get caught in a lie when I request it.

I never lie @BananaPancakes: ! It never dawned on me that it would change the price! Now I feel sort of dumb for not lying, haha.

I don't lie only because I usually only choose a hotel for their free breakfast buffet.

I think the only difference that it might make is if the hotel has a complimentary breakfast. In college I worked at a really nice hotel, where they had complimentary cook to order breakfast, and at check in you were give "tickets" for how many people were checked in for breakfast the next day! That we we would catch people lying!

I don't see why they should charge more if there is no free breakfast!

I only lie when it costs more for extra people. Sometimes it doesn't.

I don't do this 99% of the time. Because for safety reasons they really need to know how many people are in the room.

The case where I would do this is if I had 3 kids. Most of the time it is a max 4 occupancy but I'm not splitting a kid to another room. Too much could go wrong with that.

Growing up there were 4 kids and this came up and we did just put 4 occupancy so we didn't get split up.

i always put 2. i've never run into an issue and i don't usually do places with breakfast. the only time we HAD to tell the truth was booking hostels and a place to stay in venice during carnival. europe is stricter for sure.

I always put two and don't feel like I'm "lying" so I guess that make me a bad person but whatever! My theory is, let's say you are single and pick someone up at a bar - you don't then go say there were 2 people here last night! Or you had friends come back to hotel room and it gets late and they stay the night.

eh ... i think it depends. I've actually never stayed in a room with other couples - we usually get our own rooms. BUT I have gone on vacation with my mom and she stayed with us in the room and we put down 2 because they would charge for a roll out bed, but we opted for the 2 queen bed and wouldn't need the roll out bed. So yes, i've lied about it. It only becomes a hassle because you're only given 2 room keys .... but i give one to her and 1 to my husband and I'm usutally with either or.

If you aren't staying for breakfast, I would totally lie. It isn't any more work for them if there are four people in two beds instead of just two, so I think it's ridiculous that they would charge more.

The reasons extra folks in a room costs more:

1) more electricity- phone chargers, blow dryers, flat irons (wether there are additional ones or the outlets are used longer like the iron is plugged it's MORE)

2) more water- showers, flushing the toilet, hand washing

3) more towels- used towels means more laundry (electricty, soap, water)

So, yes more people using the hotel amenities (water & electricity) increases the hotel costs.
