DH and I were talking about pools. He really wants one if we have room for it in our (future) backyard.
I don't know. How much work is it to have one? I think I would rather save that money for a nice beach vacation or eventually own a place near the beach.

No. I want my best friend to have a pool though so I can enjoy it and not have to put up with all the maintenance and concerns about safety!

If I had a pool in my back yard it would only be good for swimming 1 month of the year and the rest maybe ice skating. haha so no.
Although, I really like @Happygal: 's approach! hahaha

We have one and if I had to do this home search all over again I would just hold out for a house on a lake.
Monthly maintenance is $85 and once a year we have to get a new filter $100 and twice a year we need stabilizer $45. Whenever our own pool is low we have to I add water $$$. Our pool was saltwater until the mechanism broke. We haven't fixed it yet because that's $1,000. The saltwater made swimming so wonderful, so since we are just regular chlorine now we have not swam in it in months.

I'd love to have one. I'd never have one put in though. A base model costs $50k here and it's worth 10k of value when you sell.

It would take up our entire backyard, so I would say no. 
My parents have one in their backyard, and it is really nice to have. If we had a bigger outdoor area, I would love it.

yes with @leialou - i was quoted about $50K for a pool in my yard and my real estate friend said it'll increase my home value by, at most, $10K so he advised against it. =( i'd love one though!

We just talked about this last night and both decided no. Too much maintenance required for something we would only use 2 or 3 months out of the year. Now, I'd love to have a close friend or relative with a pool that I could use whenever I wanted!

I'd rather just go to the neighborhood pool than have one in our backyard. They make me nervous with other kids, and they're a lot of work! Plus, our backyard isn't that big!

We have one and it is a lot of work for DH to keep it maintained. I'm not sure if we want a pool if we ever move!

No, they are a lot of work and we wouldn't get to use it often in Washington. Besides, I worry about freak accidents happening with a baby and toddler!

No way. We live in Minnesota, so that's a huge factor, but for the money/work/maintenance...not my thing.

I'm not sure.. Maybe if there were more than three months out if the year we could use it? The safety aspect of it concerns me more so than the maintenance even if we put up a locked fence.

Nope. My mom and my MIL both have pools and I will definitely be taking advantage of them with LO this summer. I'm glad we don't have one though, and would never want one, because I'd be too nervous about kid pool accidents. Both my brother and I fell into our grandparents' pool as toddlers and they were pretty close calls. It makes me anxious just thinking about having one.

My grandparents have an inground pool and we always spent our summers swimming at their house. It was a blast. It's definitely a lot of upkeep. I would prefer to have a saltwater pool if possible. I'd definitely consider buying a house with a pool whenever we make it back to GA. We could easily get 4-5 months of use each year.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: oh wow, that is not that expensive. I don't want my husband to find out. We only have an above ground and it would be kind of pathetic to pay someone to take care of it but he hates doing it.

Our new house (that we get to close on in 6 weeks) has an inground pool that uses reverse osmosis instead of chemicals!

I think it depends where you live. My parents had a super awesome pool but I'm not sure we got enough use out of it, even though it was heated. I think if you love in FL a pool is awesome to have!

I'd rather not. It would only be useful for a max of three months a year, and I'd be worried about the safety with our kids and on the off chance the a neighbor kid wandered in or something, even with a gate and stuff. I would like to have a good friend/neighbor with one though!

I live in southern CA, and I would love one. That being said, I have no real concept of the amount of maintenance required. I grew up in WI and no one I knew had a pool.

Nope. We're anti-pool (for us). My parents had one when I was growing up and after they sold that house they swore never again because it ended up being a huge PITA.
We are lucky though because DH's sister and BIL have a pool and they live 10 minutes away. We have an open invitation to swim any time we want

@Mrs. High Heels: Yeah, a few of the homes we are looking at have one and I'm wondering if I should nix it off our list.
With twins and I did not grow up around pools, it makes me nervous.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I should call my insurance agent to see how much home insurance goes up by having a pool. Did you notice a significant increase when you bought your home?

@bluestriped bee: another question is if the pool is set up for chlorine or saltwater. Saltwater pools are easier to care for and better for your skin.
Also if the in ground pool is made with a liner which has to be replaced more frequently and can tear or concrete which only has to be refinished every 10 years or so.

@bluestriped bee: I went from renting to owning w/ a pool ( prior homeowner's installed it), so I didn't have a chance to compare insurance premiums. One thing though many of the insurance carriers require the pool is enclosed by a locked fence; otherwise, the carrier would exclude the liability for the pool.

We have an inground pool. When we purchased this house (4 years ago) I was against the pool because I was worried about maintenance.
Turns out it isn't bad at all. We have a robot vacuum that does all the work and once we close it for the winter, we don't think about it at all. I love having it now, we can just pop in for a quick swim on the weekends without having to lug everything into the car and out in public. I finally have it set up how I want it with chairs and umbrellas.
It is a traditional chemical pool, my husband aerates like a lunatic so we don't use that much chlorine at all. I think I saw him put it in twice this summer. We also have a heater with a propane tank to extend the season. When we bought the house we had the pool inspected and the inspector told it us it was a liner pool, which I thought meant it was like swimming in a plastic bag, but it isn't at all. The liner was 2 years old when we bought the house and has another 20 years in at least.
