@Meridian: my DD was born in March and it was freezing - I had her sleep in a hat for about 3 weeks until the Ped told me to stop - that she could overheat - yikes!!!

No one told me either until I asked!

Our midwife told us not to leave hats on them inside after the first 24 hrs.

I put one on him for a little bit after a bath but otherwise, no.

Oh LO never wore a hat either, even in the NICU they barely had one on her. She wore one home since it was a cold day, but that was it.

We did when he first came home but then I got worried it would slide down and smother him

Not after like a week old and only when she fell asleep on us.

Not at all, not even at the hospital.

We did it for about three weeks (March baby).

I definitely never put hats on babies as a nanny (nor did the parents). Like @psw27, it always seemed dangerous for smothering risk. (Not sure if that's remotely true, just what I would be worried about.)

Just in the hospital - we were told by our midwives that after 24 hours, they no longer need a hat on while they sleep and in fact, it increases their risk of SIDS as it can cause them to overheat.

My dd never wore a cap afte we left the hospital. I don't think she even wore one in the hospital aside from a few hours after birth.

Never. We are advised in the UK to never put hats on babies while indoors.

Never once we were home. It never even occurred to me! We just use it for outside in the cold
