My DH and I really only ever have casual dates these days! As in pizza and beer. I am planning him a surprise trip to the city and sprang for a fancy hotel. I figured we would meet up at the hotel bar and have dinner somewhere. I have no idea how people dress for fancy date nights these days! I don't want to look like I'm going to a wedding you know? But also don't want to look like a grown-up dressed up like a teenager.

this probably sounds weird, but The Real Housewives of Pick A City seem to do fancy dinners right. Do you watch any of the franchises and like a certain housewife's style? If I were buying new I would look for Rachel Roy. And for a shoe a chunky heel or embellished sandal with skinny heel.

@Bibliolove: any suggestions for brands, etc? is it sad that my only black dresses are like, funeral garb? I am wardrobe impoverished it would seem! DH and I actually do have one black tie thing we go to every year but it requires something fairly modest since there are a lot of old folks and his coworkers I usually rent a dress for that.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I have a black dress from Gap that is my trusty LBD. It's old though! I also have a blue wrap dress from Banana Republic that I love. Depends on how fancy you want to get, but Nordstrom has some nice options too.

@Smurfette: the four seasons! I also made a reservation at empire state South but that's just because we used to live in Athens so I really like Hugh Acheson. But I would love some more suggestions! Somewhere cozy and not too club-ish would be my preference!

If I were going to wear something from my closet, I'd put on a pair of black satin printed pants (the j crew violet poppy print), a black jewel neck fringed blazer over a black sequined tank. Then I'd put on my jeweled Badgley Mishka heels and my crazy mixed media collar necklace and call it done.
For the record, I don't own an LBD or nude heels, so I couldn't even put those on if I wanted to.

I don't know how stylish I am anymore, but I have shirt-dress from the Loft that is my current go-to for occasions requiring more than jeans. I can dress it down with boots or up with heels.
If you're going to have a car at the hotel, one of my favorite romantic restaurants in Atlanta is Anis in Buckhead. It's very cozy, tucked into a little house on a side street, and they serve amazing French food. It's also not super fancy or super expensive.
Other places you might want to check out: Ponce City Market (I haven't been yet myself but I really want to go), Front Page News (not that fancy but would be walking distance from the hotel and the patio is great for drinks/dessert), Cafe Intermezzo (also close by and they have amazing desserts/coffee), Ecco (not too far but may not be walking distance, haven't been but have heard it's great).I work in Midtown, just a couple of streets over from the Four Seasons, so let me know if you have any questions about the area.
