Gonna follow this one - my husband doesn't care if he's late either and never thinks it's a big deal. It drives me crazy!

My son just has no sense of urgency. I've been trying to figure this out too. Lately though he's been really into telling time. He got a watch from my cousin last year. He's been wearing it more recently. He knows when he needs to get to school and what time we need to leave to get there on time so he's been able to watch his own time. He's still slow but he has been better recently.

maybe for every minute he's late to school, he has to go to bed that many minutes earlier? So it's not REALLY a punishment but still has consequences. If it's just a matter of being 5 minutes late, it probably won't bother him, but if you guys are 15-20 minutes late, it would definitely be noticeable if you're going to sleep at 7:40 vs 8.

@mrbee: also, I totally geeked out and drew some pie charts and bar graphs for my daughter one day. I was actually surprised she kinda got the concept. I shaded blue her "getting ready time" and pink her "play time". I showed how if she spent lots of time getting ready she would only be left with a little bit of ply time (this was getting ready for bed). The visuals definitely helped though!

@mrbee: We recently had to bring it up when we were going to a birthday party the other weekend. I told her that we had to get there on time because they were waiting for all the kids to get there so they could all go swim and start the party activities. I didn't really use the word respect but just that we wouldn't want to make her friends wait and wouldn't want to miss the activities.

If they are just doing free play in the morning at school though that might not work.

@rachiecakes: Honest to God, my husband's lateness is probably the biggest fight in our marriage. I know in the grand scheme of things are are darn lucky if this is our biggest issue, but man it makes me crazy!!

@mrbee: does your son need that time to settle down?

I am not sure I'd be stressing myself out to get him there unless it was because of your schedule, for example. Sometimes there is value to being the last one in the door. I realize I am being a contrarian here, but I tend to create a lot of stress for myself around being on time, and I am trying to avoid that for my son. My husband, he's Swiss, so he's a clock inside, lol. He is perfectly on time, all the time.
