T is in daycare 8 hours a week and I am giving $20-25 gc to 5 teachers

We give both of DD's teachers $10 to a local cafe. We do $10 because that is about how much a meal plus drink costs (plus or minus a dollar). We might tag on a $10 Target card too because her current two teachers are amazing.

@SweetiePie: I'm in the same boat. First year ofpreschool for my 3.5 yo, she goes 2 mornings a week for 3 hours. Her teachers are really nice. The class mom is organizing a group gift with $20 per kid, towards both teachers. So I'm thinking maybe adding a $10 or $15 gift certificate to alocal coffee shop plus a little handmade card and ornament from LO? I asked the class mom what she thinkspeoplw will do and she is doing something like baked goods plus the group gift.

What if you decide on an appropriate total amount and then divide it by 4?

Are you gifting everyone the same amount? When my son was in daycare, I gifted the director. When he was in preschool, the director was gifted as part of the "fee" that was gathered by the Parent Organization.

Last year I did $25 gift card per teacher and 2 dozen homemade shortbread cookies. He had 3 teachers in his room, plus the four teachers in the infant room he'd recently left, plus the director. It was an expensive year. This year I'll probably do the same but he only has 3 teachers.

I do $25 for their teachers.

$25 Walmart GC for three teachers, plus cookies & body butter. Overall, I am trying to spend roughly $115 total on gifts/ packaging.

Your post got me so excited. I guess one is better than none....but I'd rather get a discount on all 5 cards!!

@meadow: It's not a limit of one gift card per customer, it's one transaction per customer with a max discount of $30. So you could buy $300 worth of gift cards in one transaction.

Just got Target gift cards today too! We are gifting two $25 gift cards to DD's preschool teachers.

I was thinking $25 each. We have done $50 before but with two in daycare now, $ is a bit tighter.

the parent's association at our school organizes very generous birthday, holiday, and end-of-year gifts for all the teachers (basically, a mall gift certificate -- it is valid at ANY store in the mall...Nordstrom, Apple, Gap...)
Because of this, there isn't much expectation that parents give their own gifts (because our Parent Association dues cover this 'official' gift). So, we are just going to give a small batch of holiday cookies from my favorite bakery and DS is decorating cards that I will write notes on.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Not sure how many are on the staff - I buy for 50 people and its been enough (I do the same ting during teacher appreciation week). It cost me $50 last fall.

Given you have one LO, who is still young you may not have encounter so many of the staff that you need to do this/want to do this yet. For me, I have K who is 3.5 and in Pre-school...I also have E who is 9 mos (still in the infant room). This is the only daycare center we have used - so since K was 3.5mos. K has been through almost every class room there, the teachers still play a role in her life. A friendly face when she comes in the door, helping her new teachers get to know her, little things throughout her day. So it gives me a way to acknowledge their continued investment in my child - without having to buy gifts for 20+ teachers!

I also have E who is still to go through those classrooms...but I know they will invest in her the same they have invested in K. Plus - many of the teachers spend their breaks in the newborn room - so they do spend time with E now.

@JMOM: I would like one to Target/walmart vs teacher supply store for me! I find the specialty teacher stories are often prohibitively expensive and I can get more of what I need and want at other stores so I tend to go there first anyway.

@Shannon: When I was a teacher (MS/HS) I got very few gifts. The most generous gift I got was a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. I don't know if that's because of the number of teachers high schoolers have, or the SES of my students' families, or what, but I agree with you that smaller dollar amounts are probably more common/a lot of families don't give monetary gifts (outside of preschool).
