R received a $100 gift card to Barnes and Noble for his birthday last month. We haven't taken him to get any books yet. How would you go about spending it? Go and stock up on a variety and types of books now? Let him go every few months to pick out a few books? Wait until he needs a distraction or we need something to do and go?

Barnes and Nobles has an awesome toy selection. We got magnatiles from there as well as a vet kit that my son uses everyday.

I'd give my daughter a set amount we could spend at a time. So maybe say "you can pick out 2 books and a toy today." Just to spread it out.

I agree I'd spread it out (and maybe get some toys, too!)...I'd also try to know your book prices before you go. I know the point was to choose books, but certain types of books are SO MUCH CHEAPER elsewhere that I'd feel like I was wasting money/value if I let DD get those at B&N.
If you want to really help direct his purchases, I think it can be fun to get a book and a toy (puppet, action figures, tube animals, etc.) along the same theme.

Does he know he has it? My son would insist on getting toys from there, so I think I might show him some books that I pre selected online.

I would definitely spread it out! My kid loves to go pick out a book and hang out there (and you can use the gift cards in the Starbucks too if you want to let him get a little treat).

Agree with @caterw: ! You can parlay that gift card into at least four fun outings with a treat, toy, and book each time!
