My toddler is 22 months old and is fairly healthy we rarely have to give her medications (tylenol/ motrin every so often) She came down with a ear infection last week and was prescribed 10 days on liquid amoxicillin. The first few doses she took without issue with a syringe. Now she's fighting it so bad that I have to hold her down and hubs has to help get it in her mouth. She's gotten really good at pushing it out of her mouth as well, meaning that we're usually covered in sicky pink medication. She get the meds twice a day and in the morning i'm on my own to do this. This morning was a disaster! I still have 7 days left of doing this.... Help!

ETA she wont take it with a spoon or in a cup. "I dont like it!" as soon as I take the bottle out of the fridge

Is the medication flavored? H does better with flavored medicine. If she won't take the syringe, will she drink it out of a cup?
ETA: I see. In that case, I just hold her down and force it in. Some people recommend flavoring it with chocolate syrup.

When you give it to her with the syringe, one thing you can do is blow in her face, it forces them to swallow.
Sounds inhumane, but my mom showed me how to do it and it works.

We've tried fancy spoons, little cups... There has to be a trick right? -
@looch: I will definitely try that... It can't be more inhumane than me bear hugging her and holding her mouth shut.... This morning I was channeling all my thoughts into turning into an octopus I needed extra arms.

Make sure to aim the syringe close to the back of the throat. It'll be harder to spit out. I also blow in the face and just keep them horizontal until they swallow. It sucks when you have to force them but they need the medicine!

Oh and sometimes my kids will end up taking i easier after we've forced a few times.

Mine usually like to take medicine, but there have been times where the medicine was awful and I had to bribe her with chocolate chips (or M&Ms). Desperate times....

We also bribe with chocolate chips. When we take the medicine out we give her 2-3 chocolate chips and a cup of water to hold, then as soon as she finishes swallowing she can chase the medicine with the water and eat the chocolate chips. Good luck, it's the worst!

I gotta wrestle my son down to the floor then pin his arms down by his side with my legs then force it into his mouth. It sucks. I squirt a lil at time and closer to the side/back of his mouth to refrain from him spitting it out.

@Chillybear: I always told DH and my mother that if anyone ever saw me give DD medicine they would probably call CPS. The Amox was the worst for us - she knew what the pink liquid looked like and freaked out. As others have mentioned - we held her down and did several small squirts of it to the back of her mouth - coupled with some blowing in the face. Its for their own good.
DD hasnt had an ear infection in 7 months (23 mos now) - thank god for tubes - but I would probably try bribery at this age too!
