I think we're going to get Charlie a real bike for his 5th birthday so he can pass on his balance bike to Olive.
Have you purchased a real bike yet? Which one did you choose and why?

Yes - When DS turned 5 we took him to Target to pick one out - but he still prefers his balance bike

C has a "real" trike. My mom got it at a consignment sale and its the one with the big removable handle. We skipped the balance bike.

We are going to do the same move as you, but for my son's 4th birthday. He is into biking but he's over his balance bike, and the 2 y.o. is itching to get on it

We got a real bike (with training wheels) when my son turned 3. It's just some no name cheap brand I found on the internet. Kid's bikes are super expensive here if you get something remotely nice or a brand you've heard of.

LO has gotten really good at his balance bike, so for Christmas we want to get him a real pedal bike. Just not sure what we are going to get yet.

My daughter is three, and she's just mastered her balance bike. I'm going to buy her a 16 inch pedal bike for christmas, because she's eager to be a Real Biker like the rest of her family. It's kind of the cutest thing ever.
Here is a picture of her doing kiddie cyclocross this weekend, because I am obscenely proud of her:

We got our son a real bike with no training wheels for Christmas. He is quite the fantastic little rider. He just turned 4 this month.

@brownie: What kind did you get? More importantly, how big is it? I'm wondering if 12" wheels are too small.

@SugarplumsMom: I have a very small person at 4 he wears 2t clothes . So we had to buy an expensive specialty bike (specialized brand) in order for his feet to touch the ground. It is the same size as his strider balance bike just with pedals.

@SugarplumsMom: i haven't bought one yet but i was thinking about going to a local bike store to try them out in person. the ones on amazon all seem to be pretty low quality.
this post was interesting!
