@LAZB: I would get her this: http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-Shapes-Sharing-Picnic-Basket/dp/B004560BPY
LO got it for her first birthday and still plays with it every day.

Shopping cart or doll stroller. Anything that can be pushed was a huge hit at that age and continues to be now at 2.5

"How do dinosaurs say happy birthday" is actually aimed at girls, that's my go to!

Ditto to what @Truth Bombs: said.
I just got my niece a baby doll stroller (a pretty sturdy one that she can lean on) and she LOVES it!!

My 'go to gift' is typically books. There are sooooo many great children's books out there.
I'm going to my cousins kids 1st birthday next weekend and she loves bath time, so I got her a bathtime book set that comes with bath toys that are in the story. Along with some other bath toys. I think she'll like it.

I give the same things for practically all children's birthdays; a check in their name for $25 and a book. So far it's been a parental favorite. But all of our friend's and family have savings accounts for their kids, so I know it's safe.

We love the Y-bike. It's awesome because it acts as a push toy until they're older then it becomes like a little bike/scooter for them. The rubber wheels are smooth and 360. If they have hardwood floors, the wheels are perfect for that since most push toys have plastic wheels and it's way too fast for a baby learning to walk.

Doll stroller is a great one. My daughter got this musical tea set for her first birthday and it was a huge hit that I think we'll get a lot of mileage out of: http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-Musical-Rainbow-Tea-Set/dp/B00CCIKII2

That picnic basket that @lawbee11 shared is a huge hit. My DD actually asked for it for her *4th* birthday, and it gets played with by every kid that comes over, so it definitely is a toy with longevity.
We had previously been giving this Fisher Price Piggy Bank http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Learning-Piggy/dp/B000A88KOA and a bedtime book http://www.amazon.com/Ill-See-Morning-Mike-Jolley/dp/0811865436/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1431357404&sr=1-1&keywords=i%27ll+see+you+in+the+morning
