Hellobee's "no ban" policy, and how we plan to handle trolls/flamebait

Hellobee came out of beta just a few weeks before Olive was born, so the site is around 16 months old! In all that time, we've had almost no trolls... it's been wonderful. In the past few days though, we've gotten 12 flags... mostly about a relatively new member.

I've been thinking a lot about how to handle the situation. We've been really careful to have an extremely light hand when it comes to moderating the site. That said, it's clear when you look at this user's comments that they're sometimes intended to incite an angry reaction. Still though, I don't like the idea of banning someone - even a troll - just because their comments are mean-spirited and flamebait-y.

So we've decided to try out a compromise: a no-ban policy. We won't ban members from the site, unless they spam or scam our members. But if you're generating a ton of flags and a careful review of your posts reveals that you're posting a lot of flamebait... then we'll consider putting your account into moderation (a new feature we've built). If you've been put into moderation, that means that every post you make will have to be manually approved before it shows up on the site.

We'll see how this "no ban" policy goes over the coming weeks. I hope it's a good compromise that allows us to minimize moderation while keeping the site relatively free of trolling and flamebait.

Let me know what you guys think!

It sounds like an effective idea, but potentially a lot of work for you as the site grows! Will you eventually have hostesses moderate these posts? Seems like it would be hard for one person to keep up with.

Can I ask what a troll is? I'm really new to online communities and don't really know what that means.

    honeydew / 7589 posts

@T-Mom: To my understanding, it's someone that purposely starts arguments for fun. They just go around starting fires and stirring up trouble.

I think it's a good idea! Will the member know they are in moderation? Kind of like a warning?

@Arden: ok thanks! Why anyone would do that is beyond me.

ETA: sounds like a good plan!

@Arden: Naw, our hostesses are here to help keep the hive buzzing and fun! This stuff is kind of the opposite of fun.

In any case, we've only had one troll in 16 months... it shouldn't be too much work for now. If it gets to be a lot, then we'll definitely look into options!

@mrsaudi: If you post something and your post is placed into moderation, you'll get a little alert that lets you know it's awaiting human review.

@Arden: Ditto this! I know you don't want to ban people, so this seems like a very nice alternative. But it does sound like it could potentially be really time consuming for you @mrbee: ! Boo to trolls!

For someone who feels like I have been "targeted" the past few days, Thank You!

I like this idea a lot, lots of blogs/etc have this manual approval process and I think it helps a lot.

If you choose to not approve/post a comment from a user under moderation, will they receive a note from you letting them know? It seems like "trolls" in the past always use that excuse, "What was wrong with what I posted"?

I think this is an interesting moderation idea and am looking forward to seeing how it works in the future!

Edit: I don't want to see first hand how it works! I hope to never have to be moderated:) ha

If a member's post is flagged by another member is the "offensive" member currently made aware of the flag? This way they can curb the tone of their comments before having their remarks pre-approved.

I think moderating comments on a privately owned site is of course fair – your site, your rules. I like the idea of human review and maybe talking to a member if there is an issue since I think some people might get flag happy with anyone who disagrees with them, and take disagreements as personal insults worthy of flags.

I think that is a very generous policy!! I love that the members of HB are, almost always, extremely kind to one another. I hope that continues and that your new policy helps to ensure that it stays a respectful place where we can agree to disagree and be mindful that most topics discussed on here, children, family, money, ect, are very personal and can be sensitive. Thank you mr bee for all your hard work!!

@Mrs Hedgehog: Lol I think there were too many new people joining wedding bee to keep up with this type of policy there

I actually really like this resolution! Deal with the problem instead of just exiling! Because honestly nothing prevents them from coming back under a different name.

@regberadaisy: Good point about coming back with a different name,....I wonder if there is a way to know if it's the same person coming back under different names. Probably not though...
