When LO and I are together, we nurse on demand. He goes 2-3 hours between feedings, takes one side each time, has had great weight gain, and is content. I can meet his intake and also pump an extra 2-3oz a day. He's a big comfort nurser too, I can tell the difference between when he's eating for food and when he's just gently sucking (very few swallows) for comfort.
At daycare, I've been sending 3 bottles with 4oz. He's going 10 hours between nursing sessions, he nurses at 7am and at 5pm. I feel like (just mommy gut) that he should be able to go 3 hours on 4oz. I asked daycare to feed him at 9, 12, and 3 but they are saying he's getting hungry after 2.5 hours and have been feeding him as soon as he seems hungry. I left 2oz ready to feed formula bottles in his cubby and he's had one as an afternoon snack every day.
I'm really conflicted. I don't want my baby to starve but I also think 14oz is kind of high. I know kellymom says 1-1.5oz per hour, which 14oz over 10 hours between nursing sessions falls into that, so maybe it's fine.
He's sleeping pretty good stretches most nights, 5-6 hours at a time, sometimes more. He's not really cluster feeding or "tanking up" in the evening or morning, so maybe he's just used to getting the bulk of his milk during the day? I don't know, I'm just thinking through this as I type.
He's not that into nursing when we get home, he usually goes an hour or so before he gets hungry. I think this is really due to the 2oz ready to feed bottle he gets late in the afternoon.
He's been getting his first bottle around 8-8:30, when he's last nursed at 7, which makes me feel like he's just getting overstimulated and cries and they feed him. (If we're together and he gets overstimulated, I take him to a quiet, calm place and nurse him, but he's not really eating, it's just comfort nursing and lasts like 5 minutes).
But then they say he's hungry again by 11ish (varies slightly from day to day) and then around 2 and at 4-4:30. Maybe he just truly needs 14oz. I just don't know. I'm frustrated, in part, because I can meet his needs when we are together but I can't pump enough for him, unless I pump on the weekends too
I'm just at a loss. He ate like crazy for my mom too but then starting slowing down as the days passed and he got used to things. He was only taking 8oz by her last day with him, but because there wasn't any pickup/drop off, it was only 8.5 hours between nursing sessions (when the timing worked out and she didn't feed him a bottle moments before I got home).
