Hotel rooms when traveling with kids

@agold: it's not all bad! sometimes the airbnbs are nicer than the hotels and for the same price or lower. like, dh and our girls came with me to a conference in Montreal last fall at a 4 star hotel, and the 2 bedroom in a luxury apartment building we found within walking distance cost less than the discounted conference rate at the hotel. and, you get a kitchen, which is pretty convenient with kiddos. those hotel mini fridges don't cut it!

@agold: It actually ended up being hilarious because DH and I were sitting on the floor in the dark and started texting each other funny memes the whole time about a fairly disastrous family visit we had that day and it helped us laugh off a long day!

this is why we book houses instead of hotels. and why we bought a travel trailer.

We went to Asheville with out 2 year old this fall and did a suite so we weren't stuck being quiet and going to bed at 7:30. It wasn't a separate room with a door but a living space, hallway with a bathroom and then the bedroom so there was enough separation. Was a separate cost but it was well worth it to have her sleep elsewhere and have extra room!

@agold: you are so smart to think ahead! I have vivid memories of being in a hotel room for 3 nights while we closed on our house where we had one room with 2 queen beds. DH and DD (age 3) both crashed in one bed and me and my 32 week pregnant belly stayed up reading books on my iPad with the lights off so I didn’t disturb them! This was not a vacation and it didn’t feel like one!

But I second the thought of an Airbnb or VRBO for actual vacation. We rent a condo at a beach for our family vacations and it is lovely and we have had success renting houses other places too. even if they are little there is so much value for adults in everyone having their own space!

We have stayed in a little bit of everything. We like staying in Embassy suites or Hyatt house best because of the convenience. But we’ve stayed in plenty of regular hotel rooms especially at resorts. Our kids tend to be night owls and on vaca I can never get them to bed before nine so at that point I just want to pass out anyway. Sometimes we stay up and play on our phones or something. Rental houses through Airbnb or vrbo are great but we have a little trouble booking Because of stringent cancellation policies. We need everything to be cancelable because I have an elementary and daycare kid who are constantly bringing home germs. I do not feel comfortable booking a nonrefundable vacation. So lately we stick to chain hotels.

@agold: Ha! Yeah I agree! We try to get away twice to three times a year. So it depends. When Lo gets older he can join us on one and the other will be for us! There’s so much out there for all budgets so it will work out!!!!!
