My mom tells me that she and my dad went away for the weekend and my grandmothers sleep trained me, so she doesn't know what they did. Every time my parents are here for bedtime I come out of the room, B cries (and it only lasts a few minutes), and my dad says "Do you want me to go in and pat his back?" No, Dad, I obviously don't want you to do that, or I'd be doing it myself, gah!

I'm fine with CIO in small doses. I've let DS2 cry for up to an hour. My family is on board and understands the need to CIO sometimes.

My family was supportive, although the we didn't fully CIO. We did the "chair method", where we sat beside her crib and offered bum pats and shushing and pick ups as needed. There was still some crying! My family saw just how exhausted and completely spent I was and knew that it was best for me and my daughter to go through that process.

My MiL was semi-supportive, but I don't think she really understood what we were doing. Lol.

We sleep trained LO over Christmas while we were at my parents'. Not ideal, but since DH was going to be around and not working, we decided to go with it. My parents were both like your mom in that it really bothered them, and they couldn't understand why I was doing this to him, so I got many offers to go and walk him around. I was okay with them doing that for naps to make sure that he got on a schedule, but put my foot down at night. It was more stressful since there were 4 people sitting around listening to him cry - but thankfully he always fell asleep bw 5-20 mins. I sat them down and explained the reasoning behind it, and they had seen how bad his sleep was when they'd visited the month before. Still, they didn't relax on the side-eyes and judgement until he actually started sleeping way better. I've actually gotten a few "You were right!"s out of them since! Have you sat your mom down and explained how CIO is supposed to work and how your daughter will benefit in the long run from self-soothing?

My mom thought the whole sleep training thing in general was sort of BS until she baby sat my nephew for a couple weeks when my sister went back to work. He just was not sleeping at all and was overtired and miserable the first week. My sister did CIO during the time period and my mom saw what a difference it made and now she is pro whatever it takes for your kid. So she has never questioned us on sleep training. (How she raised 5 kids and never did sleep training I don't know).

Dhs parents have never said anything either way.

My parents never sleeptrained - culturally, cosleeping or at least room sharing was the norm so my mom would just have us sleep with a boob in the mouth all night. However when my son was born she was lecturing us about how we should sleeptrain, which was annoying because she had no idea what she was talking about. We DID end up sleep training and she loves to take credit even though she freaks out whenever she hears him cry and can't stand hearing him fuss for more than 5-10 minutes when she's around. My dad also boasts how we were never sleeptrained and slept just fine. They are hypocritical inconsistent weirdos.

My parents were pushing us to do CIO pretty early. But only because they live on the other side of the country - when I jokingly told them if they were so pro-CIO then I would call them in the middle of the night and let them listen to her scream, they shut up pretty fast!

My parents think we should CIO. We haven't sleep trained any of the kids. They sleep well though so it's mostly a non-issue.

They all practice it. And I'm in the boat where "if baby is crying, something is wrong and I'll try everything to fix it but if nothing works I'll just hold the baby".

My family is pro-CIO, but my mom and I had a major blowout the one night I stayed at their place and I let him fuss (not even cry, mind you) while going down for a nap and she kept commenting, "How cruel." So in theory, they like it.

DH's family does not practice CIO. I have done CIO for max 20 minutes a few times with our LO, but don't have the heart for it. I'd rather have him come snuggle in bed and we all get some sleep, and I'm a softy.

We are open to CIO, but didn't have to do it much with DD. We tried to help her learn to self-soothe early on (for example, swaddling with her arms out), and letting her fuss herself to sleep. She's naturally a pretty good sleeper, thankfully, so the rare times she has really CRIED have been because something was wrong. We've never had our methods challenged by family, other than my mom going and walking her around during the fussing stage. I just roll my eyes, because eventually she has to put her down and the fussing starts all over! She's almost two though, so it hasn't been an issue for a while. DS is due next month, so I guess we'll see what happens the next time around!

My MIL got mad at me the other day because DS was fussing in his bouncer so I picked him up! She told me I need to let him fuss, that it's good for his lungs lol! I'm not against CIO but the kids only 7 weeks old . I really just want to hold all the cuteness and get all the snuggles!

My in laws also did not sleeptrain and can't handle crying. But my poor MIL was a SAHM with 3 kids born back to back like clockwork every 2 years and did all the night wakings herself. She never sleeptrained her kids because she didn't know that was a thing plus there were 5 people in a tiny house. Anyways, my BIL apparently was still getting up at least once a night screaming in his bed for a "warm bot" at 2 years old and my MIL would get up as fast as she could to keep the other kids asleep, heat a pan of milk on the stove, pour it into a sippy and take it to him. He would apparently chug it and then go back to sleep but she did this every stinking night. When she went into labor with #3 she told her mother about how he would need a bottle and to make sure it was warm, etc. etc.

Grandma said ok and sent her to the hospital but was like I'm not getting up to make warm milk for anybody and let him holler his head off. MIL came home a few days later and Lo and behold BIL had stopped asking for warm bots and was STTN at 2 years old finally. My MIL thought Grandma was a genius.

I think my mom would've supported CIO, since she's always the "stricter" one.

I'm the firmly anti-CIO camp though. Initally my mom was concerned about MY lack of sleep but I explained to her my viewpoint and she totally suported it.

I wouldn't do it. My mom suggested we do it.

My mom was pushing me to do it long before we actually did, and then supported me through the months and months and multiple attempts that it took to finally get my son to STTN at 20 months!
My MIL was totally supportive as well. I think when you have twins, all bets are off in terms of survival, functioning and sleep. It wasn't fun but I was dying, and I think they both saw that and felt it's what I had to do to survive.
