We're about to move and mine will be about 40 miles and about as many minutes, unless it's rush hour, then more. So unless it's morning rush hour it'll be ok, just can't decide whether it's worth switching. (Edit- I can plan appointments appropriately, but I'm more worried about the birth. This is baby #3, and I do not have a history of quick labors.) I'm really not impressed by the OBs available in my new area, at least not from what I can find online.

How bad would it be during rush hour?
My midwife was only 7 miles but about half an hour or more in traffic (yay city living). Since it was my second baby with the practice they were able to spread out my routine appts. I wouldn't have wanted to be much further. I also would have come really close to having the baby in the car if I was much further than that. But I also understand really liking a practice and wanting to stick with it.

I don't think that's too far, especially if you're not worried about having a quick labor. It's important to feel comfortable with your doctors, and it doesn't sound like there is much danger of not making it in time based on your history. I recently moved and am now close to 30 miles from my OB/GYN and hospital and plan to stick with them for any future pregnancy since I like my doctors. Then again I've never made the mad dash to the hospital after going into labor (I was induced with DS), so perhaps I'm underestimating the stress involved!

Mine is 14 miles away but about 40-60 minutes to get there. I love her so I make the trip. The hospital is slightly closer and less time. With my last baby we went in at midnight so there was luckily no traffic.

@Foodnerd81: it could be anywhere up to maybe 1.5 hours?
My concern is that with my first I had back labor and made a mad dash to the hospital in so much pain and with my second just between calling the doctor feeling very iffy about it and getting to the hospital about 20 mins away after calling MIL to come over I got to a 5. I'm worried we'll wait to make sure it isn't a false alarm then miss the opportunity for an epidural. I have NO desire to do a med free birth. None.

that's way too far for me for regular visits and since i DO have a history of quick l&ds, 1 hour in the car sounds like a recipe for me to have a road side delivery.

Personally Id consider that way too far. My hospital was about that far away and I'm fine with that but no way would I drive that far for regular visits. My OB is on the way home from work (when I made most of my appointments) and about 20ish minutes from home. I didn't even like it being that far whenever I had to make an appointment at a time

I would not want to be in a car that long while in labor. Too far.

Also consider how you would feel if for some reason you became high-risk and needed to see your OB multiple times per week. Would you still be OK with that driving distance? I unexpectedly became high-risk with DD3 and they were definitely times I wish I had picked a closer practice when I was making a 30 or 40 minute commute times per week.
