Everyone I know tells me they are out of them very quickly, but I'm just curious what everyone's experience was here. I obviously have no idea how big LO will be once born, but I have very few newborn clothes (maybe just 4 onesies)!

Approximately 5 seconds? Lol. She was 8 lbs 11 oz at birth and wore them for maybe a week. She was fine in 0-3 month stuff from the beginning.

My little lady can pull of a lot of her newborn clothes still at 8 weeks. I never thought they'd last this long!

I think 5 weeks? He probably could have worn 0-3 but they were very big on him and it drove me crazy to have him swimming in clothes. He was 7lbs 11oz when born and 7lbs 4oz when we came home.

@Pepper: Can I add a follow up question?
How long were they in NB clothes, AND did you have a decent idea how big they would be before they were born?
Like, if the doctor is estimating the LO will be big (8 pounds plus, I guess?) it would make sense that they would only be in NB for a short time. Or, if they estimate LO will be small, they would be in the NB longer? I'm wondering if I can wait until the last few weeks to decide if I need more.

Nearly a whole month with my second born, only twice with my first born.
I actually had to go buy newborn clothes for my second born since I didn't have any!

I think it was about a month or longer, he was 7.7 at birth and gained quickly. I'm not sure if 0-3 would've fit that early, I just used what we had! FWIW I hated putting onesies over his giant head & we only used sleep and plays - I went out and bought more of those once he was born, he wore them day and night!

LO was 10lbs 1oz and never fit in NB. We were expecting her to be big so I returned all of the NB stuff we received as gifts.

12 weeks!! I know that's not the norm though... (he wasn't a preemie either)
grapefruit / 4731 posts
I didn't get any newborn clothes because people told me the same thing.
I had to go out and buy newborn clothes right after we were released from the hospital because LO was swimming in 0-3 months.
He grew out of them in about 2 months. I would suggest getting a few outfits and definitely bring one with your to the hostipal as his coming home clothes.

My LO is 4 weeks (tomorrow!) and she still fits better in NB outfits. The 0-3 months are hit or miss. Thank goodness for her fluffy, CD bottom or the 0-3 wouldn't fit at all!
She was 8lbs 2oz at birth and 8lbs 12 oz at 2 weeks. I had an idea that she would be at least 8lbs, so I only have like 3 outfits/onesies. I wish I had a couple more cute things, but don't want to buy more, so we are dealing with big clothes for now.

@Foodnerd81: oh, no. my midwife never indicated how big he might be. he was smaller than I anticipated, just over 7 lbs.
bananas / 9973 posts
About 8 weeks for most of them. But since then, she's been growing like a weed and I fear will outgrow most of her 0-3 months really quickly! Mostly though, I would just get NB sleepers. I'd say 6 sleepers were good for rotation since we'd go through 2 or 3 a day!
squash / 13764 posts
@Foodnerd81: LO was exactly as estimated, pretty much--I was told he'd be between 7 and 7.5lbs. I just had no idea what that really meant! That seemed like a fairly normal size, but he is long and skinny, so while 0-3 month clothes could have fit lengthwise pretty quickly, they were huuuge on his body.

2 weeks. But she was a big girl. Still we used up a lot of clothes..... She had reflux so there was a lot of spit up.

@Foodnerd81: Add away!
Sounds like I could stand to buy some more! I may buy some and leave the tags on, so that way I can return them if he ends up being big. He's due beginning of July, so I'm thinking I can get away with just NB onesies and a diaper.

DD is just growing out of them now at 4 weeks. She was 8 lbs 4 oz at birth, and long and lean. Funny thing is that the first part of the clothes not to fit has been the feet...she has GIANT feet!

She was 8.4 when born but still fit in them. She wore them for about a month. Most of her clothes were Carter's since I didn't buy many newborn, all were gifts or hand me downs.

Err, we never put him in the newborn clothes received. He spent his first month in side snap kimono tops and a diaper.

Are NB clothes different than 0-3 months? If so then I guess she's never been in NB. 0-3 was big on her though until about 2-3 weeks in when she reached 9 lbs. She was born at 7 lb 10, got down to 6 lb 14 but regained the weight in 3 days. Personally I don't think I would've bought more than 1-2 NB outfits or so...you'd maybe want something cute that fits correctly for photos.
Her feet though? We have socks for 3-6 months and they were too small at 3 weeks. The cute baby booties I brought for her to wear home from the hospital were never worn. ):

A was born at 7lbs 7 oz, 19.5 inches, and some of the newborn clothes were too big on him for the first week or so. He is 7 weeks tomorrow and I think tonight is the last time he'll be wearing NB sleepers. They juuuust fit.

DD was born at 7 lbs 2 oz and was in nb size clothes for six-eight weeks. I actually returned all the nb gifts thinking she'd be bigger, and bought clothes when she got here!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
8 lb 2 oz and she wore them for a month. She outgrew then lengthwise before width wise. Last week I noticed they were a bit snug on her belly. She's 6 weeks and 10 lb 6 oz. doc estimated she'd be about 8 Lb
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
7 lbs 14 and she still wears them at almost one month. The sleepers with feet are getting snug!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Pepper: he grew out of them by 1-month! he was born at 7 lbs 14 ounces, and by one month he was almost 13 lbs.. 95th percentile... so a very chunky, big baby!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Foodnerd81: I had a good idea what size my son would be because my belly and my pregnancy weight at 39 weeks was almost identical to my 1st pregnancy... so I just had a feeling that my baby would be the same size the 2nd time around, and I was right!
pomelo / 5258 posts
My baby was projected to be 9.5lbs based on a 34 week ultrasound. Because she was going to be big I only had 2 NB sleepers MIL had given us. Much to my surprise she was 6lbs 10oz. She ended up wearing NB for 5 weeks.
coconut / 8475 posts
Was 7lbs 8oz and wore them for about 6w.
The footed ones were getting snug by 5w though.
I listened to people who said not to buy NB and so I only got 3/4outfits. Big mistake! I had to go out at 4 days PP and get about 12 NB outfits.
1- they go through outfits like crazy at the beginning (spit up)
2- I was too exhausted to wash laundry everyday
So we needed a good amount. I don't regret it. I can reuse them for other kids, sell them or loan them out to friends.
pomelo / 5628 posts
Loong time. He's a preemie but can pretty much still fit the onesies now at about 12 pounds (4 months adjusted). He grew out of the sleepers after about 8 weeks adjusted.
coconut / 8681 posts
He was in them for about a month and weighed 7 pounds,6 ounces when he was born. I'd probably buy a few more outfits because I know I didn't want to do laundry all the time.

I had heard the same thing when I was pregnant with DD, so I didnt buy any newborn clothes. Thank goodness we were gifted some because she swam in 0-3 for a while. In fact the outfit I took to the hospital was 0-3 and the pants would fall off when you picked her up. LOL She wasnt small either 7 lbs. 15 oz. and 20 1/2 in. long.
pomegranate / 3858 posts
She wore NB for 10 weeks. She was 5 lbs 8 oz at birth. I was told she looked like she'd be 7 and a half pounds.at birth! We bought extra NB stuff...
bananas / 9227 posts
DD was 19.7 inches and 7lbs 3 oz when she was born. She was in NB clothes for a lot longer than I anticipated. I forget how long, but I even had to buy more NB sizes because of it.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@Pepper: I can't remember exactly how long but I do remember using them much longer than we thought! He was born at 7lb 7oz, 21" and gained quickly but certain brands ran bigger and we were able to use them past the weight recommendations. We went through the 0-3 m super quickly since we used the NB so long.
@Foodnerd81: DS was estimated at 39w to be "barely 6 lbs" and long. He ended up being late, born 41w2d, and was 7lbs 7oz. The midwife just told me at my first prenatal appointment for this pregnancy that she was surprised how big DS was at birth. I think he grew a lot those last weeks because I sure did
pomegranate / 3516 posts
Maybe a week or so. We didn't buy a lot of newborn clothes though. She never fit well into her newborn onesies that we bought her but she had a couple of sleepers that she could wear for a couple of weeks. We bought mostly 0-3 month clothes for when she was born so we didn't try really hard to put her in them though. She was 21 inches and 8lb 5oz at birth.
