I had thee worst day ever in my life today. I'm so upset.
Lo had been standing for about two months. She's 9 months now. We have two rabbits that live in two separate very large metal hutches in the living room. She's been crawling over to the cage and standing next to it to pet the bunny. Today as she was doing this I walked up to her to pick her up. I was but not 4 feet away when she lost her balance and fell. Problem is she had decided today she was gonna bite the bars on the cage. When she lost her balance her bottom teeth hooked the bar. She went one way and the cage pulled in the opposite direction. One of her bottom teeth got pulled forward flat. It all happened so fast. I was RIGHT THERE!!!!!! I'm so upset! I called my boss (she's a dentist) and rushed her into our office. We barley got a digital x-ray, but we were able to see that the root wasn't fractured. We pushed the tiny tooth back upright and it has stayed there since. Baby Phoenix heads to the ortho surgeon in the morning. Tonight we pray that the permanent tooth bud under this primary didn't suffer any trauma. Baby girl is doing great. She's happy and played the rest of the day. Inside her mouth is all bruised around the gums. She had some Tylenol and is now sleeping. I keep replaying it over and over again in my head. Poor tiny baby should never have had to feel pain like that. The Hutches are being removed and the bunnies going up for adoption. This too makes me sad because they once were my only babies.
I SO deserve the shittiest mom award today.

AHHHHHHhhhh!!! I am glad she's okay and hope her tooth heals with no noticeable defects. Poor baby girl! It's NOT your fault though. Accidents happen all the time, everyday.

You do NOT deserve the shittiest mom award. It was an accident! Hopefully the surgeon gives you good news tomorrow. Is there anywhere else for the bunnies to go in the house? You shouldn't give them up for adoption over an accident. Kids fall when they're learning to stand and walk. Hugs.

Hugs, mama! You are not the worst mom in the world! You were right there, but quick reflexes can't catch everything. It's not like you were in another room and left her unsupervised. I'm glad she's sleeping and doing well. It's wonderful you were able to get her to a dentist you trust so quickly!
With the bunnies, maybe rethink it in a few days when you aren't so upset. Would hate to see you make a decision you'll regret. Perhaps you can move them somewhere away from LO?

Oh my goodness! I'm so, so sorry that this happened. I'm glad that you were able to get her to the dentist ASAP and I will be praying that there is no damage to the permanent teeth.
FWIW, I suffered some tooth damage when I was two. I pulled the playpen and my sister down on top of me, hitting me in the mouth. The only thing that was wrong with my permanent teeth was some minor staining from where the buds were bruised. When I was a teenager, the dentist was able to buff it off.

Oh momma it was an accident! Neither you nor the bunnies caused it, and you couldnt have prevented it. I am so glad your baby girl is feeling better. The fact that she played all day and is now sleeping speaks for itself. Please dont feel badly. You are a great mom who was there for her little girl when she needed you. Thats all any of us can do

YOU ARE NOT A SHITTY MOM. In fact, I think you sound like a fantastic mother. Even though your baby had an accident, you stepped up to the plate and have done everything in your power to fix it. In fact, you are putting your rabbits up for adoption so there aren't any more accidents in the future. That doesn't sound like a bad mother, does it? I hope all the best for your baby girl.
Eta: is there another place in the house for the bunnies to go until your daughter is a more skilled walker?

I'm sorry!! That must've been difficult. I can join the crappy mom club. Yesterday LO dove off the couch (like you I was sitting right there but it happened so quickly). She landed on her face and got a bloody nose

I just can't stop beating myself up over this. It makes it so much more worse because this IS my profession. I was so sure that my kids teeth where never gonna get damaged on my clock. Little good that did me. As for the bun's, Our house is really really small. like 900sq feet. These gals are house rabbits and they live in the living room due to not having anywhere else to place them. I definitely wasn't thinking 5 yrs ago when I got them where they would be now. I feel like they gotta be removed because of the cages being metal and it now being a safety issue.
I so need a few days to think about this. I'm gonna be heart broken if they have to go. -

DS was learning to crawl around 7.5 months and somehow face planted and knocked his bottom tooth loose! And neither my husband or I saw it bc we were in other rooms, at least you were being a responsible parent and supervising! Blood everywhere, had to go to the ER, the whole 9 yards, was awful! Accidents happen (I dropped DS on his head today, ooops), don't beat yourself up about it (and keep the bunnies, it's not their fault and will be great for your LO to grow up with them!)...

My LO spilt her lip open running after bath. It is scary but they are much stronger then we give them credit for.

@MamaPhoenix: your sweet girl could have bumped her teeth on anything! I would think about it for a few days before you do anything drastic. I know you want to protect your girl, but seriously, i dont think the cages are necessarily a safety concern, any more than a coffee table or an entertainment center or bookshelf or anything else she pulls up on.

My toddler nose-dived off of my master bed at 9 months and chipped 3 teeth. I was standing right at the other side of the bed, and couldn't do anything to stop it. It truly happens to the best of us, and there is nothing you could have done. I know it is so hard in the moment, but you can't beat yourself up over it.

Oh my gosh that must have been so horrible! I'm sorry you and your little one had to go through tht but you are NOT a shitty mom. I agree with the others that you should think through the bunny plans in the morning when you are a little less emotional.
And in a funny coincidence, like @lawbee11: my daughter dive head first off a couch this week too. I was right there, I don't know how I couldn't catch her in time, but somehow she just went head first. I managed to catch her diaper so she sort of did a forward roll but we were both shaken up.
I hope things go well with the surgeon tomorrow. Keep us posted.

Thank you so much everyone. I guess I never realized how often these things tend to happen. I feel blessed to have such a wonderful group of moms around that understand that $#!T just happens to the best of us. Hope everyone's LO are all doing ok, and I'll be sure to update in the morning after our apt.

@MamaPhoenix: She's fine now. She cried for a bit afterwards and was really cuddly (I think because she was scared). But she was back to her normal self shortly after. I felt awful!! Hope everything goes well tomorrow at the surgeon's office!

I can only imagine how awful the day was and can relate to how you're beating yourself up... but you did everything right! Things like this happen (I am so glad to hear that LO is doing well) but you reacted in the best possible way. Hoping for good results at the dr tomorrow. Please do not be so hard on yourself!

Oh sweetie, it happens. Two of us with babies about the same age posted within minutes of eachother about how often they seem to hurt themselves.
About a month ago, my LO was nursing with me in bed. I put a pillow along the edge so she wouldn't roll, but she instead decided to do a head stand on top of it, and fell straight down onto the top of her head on the floor and then laid there, and didn't cry. I didn't know whether I should move her in case there was trauma to her neck, so I called 911 to find out. Turns out that they HAVE to dispatch someone, and can't give you advice over the phone. So, two fire trucks and an ambulance showed up at my house, and they were discussing whether they needed to notify child protective services. Of course also on the hottest day of the year, so I'd been letting LO wander around the house in just a diaper, so we looked sooo trashy as we're meeting with emergency services on the front lawn. Turns out it was just a nasty bump and they decided I wasn't a negligent enough parent to involve the ministry, but I still felt sooo bad.

Hugs to you - it happens and you can't beat yourself up over it! DD1 chipped her front tooth when she was 21 months old whilst simply walking on our tile floor. She tripped over absolutely nothing whilst carrying a toy, couldn't get her hands down in time, and chipped a chunk off her front tooth. I was standing right next to her but wasn't able to grab her in time. I cried for days every time I looked at it, feeling like the world's absolute worst mother, but you know what? It happens to all of us. Hope everything goes well tomorrow!
@Sapphiresun: That's terrible! I'm so sorry they all stood around discussing whether or not a report needed to be filed with CPS. Accidents happen and there is absolutely no need to make a parent already feeling horrible, feel even worse. I'm glad your LO was ok!
