I have a job where I see clients one-on-one. So far two of them have given me baby gifts (SO SWEET and unexpected!) in my office, where I have opened them, oohed and aahed, said thank you, hugged them, etc.
Do I also send a TY note? I always do after a shower or after receiving something in the mail (duh), but am never sure about in-person gifts like these.

Yes - I send a thank you note too. I would especially do so for a client.

Yes, I would just to be nice. If I gave you a gift where you thanked me in person like that I wouldn't be upset if I didn't get one however, so either way!

If its a token gift and they watched me open it and i was able to thank them in person I consider that enough (showers are a different story) if i was a bigger gift they bought you a crib or gave your child a large sum of money or bond that would constitute a hand written note.

If it's a shower, or as you said sent in the mail then obviously I would, but if I can thank them right then and there in person then I do not send thank you notes.

That depends. If it was a token like a book or a onesie I wouldn't. If it was something more substantial I would.

Thanks all! They are definitely token gifts (washcloths, baby blankets). And I guess I should clarify.. they aren't 'paying' clients (ie they don't pay me or my company.. they are employees of a company and have access to me as a free benefit.. if that makes sense). It shouldn't change things, but just in case that affects people's responses.

It depends on who gives it to me. I'm pretty into thank you cards, but I mostly send them to older generations (like aunts/uncles/grandparents). If someone like that gave me something I would later send a thank you card. The only time I wouldn't would be if it was a close friend. In that case I would just thank them in person.

I agree that it seems to be an issue with the older generations (my stepmom's family always wants thank you cards) whereas I was raised that if you thanked someone in person that should be enough. I do however send thank you notes after showers just because that's what you're supposed to do. For these little gifts I think I might send a little thank you, but it's entirely ok to skip it too.

I would always send a thank you note if someone gave me a gift for the baby whether it was in person or not.

I judge these things depending on how close I am with the person or how informal/formal our interactions are. If it was a close friend or family member that gave me a gift one-on-one, I'd thank them then, and I wouldn't bother to send a note. If it's someone I don't know super well, or have a "formal" relationship with, I'll send a note, just in case they're offended by not receiving one. In your case, since it's business-related, I would send a note.
