We recently moved to a 4 bedroom house, and we have two kids, so our fourth bedroom isn't currently being used for anything. We made it into a guest room for the time being, but we rarely have guests stay over. I think we've only had one guest stay the night in the past 6 months, so it seems like a waste of a room to keep it as a guest room. We have a bonus room, so my kids already have a play room. Does anyone have any other ideas on what to do with the spare room? If you have a spare room, what do you use it for?

We have 2 (almost 3) kids and 4 bedrooms.
1- master bedroom
2- kids bedroom- basically only sleeping and getting dressed!
3- office
4- guest bedroom (downstairs)When we start using all 3 upstairs bedrooms for sleeping, the guest room will be both an office and a guest room.

We use it as a guest room. But none of our families are local so it definitely gets used enough to be worth it.
Actually our least used room is the formal dining room, which is off the kitchen but has a door that can close to it. That is either my craft/ work space, or a staging area (like for a party I can set stuff in there and it’s outnof the way until I need it and the kids don’t get into it.)
When we moved into our house we thought it was too many rooms but we use them all!

We don't have kids yet, but one of the bedrooms is a dedicated storage room. DH has too much stuff! We're going to have to clean up before baby arrives.

We already have two dedicated guest bedrooms on separate floors, which is great for guests’ bathroom privacy. Our spare bedroom is the “office.” We are working on relocating the office contents (not all the furniture though) to downstairs since. After that the space will be tidied. One thought was to move our instruments from the bonus room in our master to the spare room so that we could rock out with guests, but that is really dreaming.

Ours is a guest room since we do have guessed stay from time to time, my family lives far away so it's nice for them and also if DH's parents want to stay over (eg to help with our new baby). But if you don't need a guest room, I'd make it a home office. Desks for both you and DH. Or if no need for an office, how about an exercise room.

We no longer have a spare room (all bedrooms are being used as bedrooms) but ideally we would have an in-law suite so my father could live with us as is health is declining. I wish I had thought about my parents when we bought our house but I didn't think their health would decline so quickly.

I use the 4th bedroom as a dressing room. We have a dedicated guest room as well.

We use it as a guest bedroom/office for DH as he works from home usually 1 day/week.

We live in a 3/2. So I wouldn't really call it a spare room...more like the catch-all

Bed 1: LO’s room (someday; currently she has a twin bed in the master and still sleeps in bed with me. Fail lol)

We have two guest rooms (we had a guest room at my old 2 bedroom house, furnished with the antique furniture I grew up with. We got a new bed when we moved and put our old one in the second room).
Before our nursery was a nursery, it was a sewing room/spare room for me. We had a TV in there, but not hooked up to cable. Just a DVD player I'd watch old series on while sewing.

We use our 4th bedroom as a dedicated guest suite (it has an attached full bath). Our parents and siblings all live a flight away so it certainly gets used. But we already have a bonus room, a play room, an a dedicated office, so there was just no need for the guest room to do double duty as we have so much other space.

Before we had kids, our two extra bedrooms were a guest room and a library. I miss having all of my books accessible (they were moved to crates in the basement when it turned into a nursery.)

Bed 1 - DD1 and DD2 share. They love it.
Bed 2 - Office/playroom/guestroom. It's right off of the kitchen/dining room (we live in an old, funky house). DH needed dedicated office space during the day and this arrangement also give us space for them to play AND a place for our parents to sleep when they visit. -
We have two spare rooms. One is DH's office. The other is a playroom/guest room. It's connected to LO's room via a jack and jill bathroom, so it's mostly used as a playroom but we have a daybed in there so can be a guest room also.

We have 5 bedrooms and 2 kids. The baby is in the tiniest room now as a nursery. Then my son has his own room. One is an office/storage for my husband. The other I use the closet for my out of season stuff and we have a guest bed that gets used once in awhile. That room has a private bath so it's a nice guest room but I think eventually will be a kid's room.

When we only had 1 kid, the spare bedroom was the guest bedroom. Even though we didn't have overnight guests often, it was good to have. Mainly my mom had slept over in the early days helping out with the baby, or if/when DH was out of town. Even if we still have a spare bedroom, I'd probably keep it as a guestroom b/c all their toys are in the living room and I'm not interested in having a separate playroom. We already have an office, so there's really nothing else I need it for.

3. Guest room - we have guests constantly, so this is very necessary. We chose the room on the main floor next to the bathroom for this, so guests never have to come upstairs. This has been great for both elderly inlaws and friends with new babies.
4. Soon to be dressing room etc. for me!! We just finished DH's man room in the basement, so now we're ready to work on this. I'm so excited, it will have loads of shelving for all my clothes and shoes (not a small amount, lol!), a chandelier, a workspace for sewing or whatever and whatever else I damn well want in there! Oh, and a full size day bed since we'll still need the space for extra guests from time to time. We originally set up the space as an office/library, but we never ever used it (laptops on the couch is how we roll when we have work to do!) so this change is needed. -

Ours we use as a guest room / office. We have family from out of town that stay with us. It mostly gets used as an office since I work from home 3 days a week. It also doubles as a craft room for sewing.

We have one extra bedroom. It's technically a guest bedroom but we very, very rarely have guests so it's basically become a storage space. Old baby items and boxes are piled on the bed and floor...

We have a guest room and an office/craft room. But both rooms look like storage rooms atm. I'm thinking about converting the office/craft room into an extension of DD's bedroom. It would mean taking down a wall and clearing it out, which I can imagine will take us a ridiculously long time, but we're not really in a hurry.

Up until a couple weeks ago we had a spare room (3 beds 1 kid). Baby 2 due in March so the spare room had to become new Nursery.
We also needed guest space but don’t have them often enough to dedicate the entire room to it.
So we had our desk in there, then a sleeper sofa and a TV. So when guests came it became their room. But in between it was an office/den sort of.I dream of having so much space some day that we don’t have to double up on usage in rooms. A separate playroom, office and guest room all sound amazing. But I also don’t want to leave the city
I can’t decide which I want more.

Our fourth bedroom is the parents' playroom. Our nice TV, gaming system, and my sewing table are in there. We have a futon and a recliner in case we ever have guests stay the night (we probably will never). It is also the room OH sleeps in when one of us is sick (he prefers the recliner when sick... I don't kick a sick man off the nice bed!!!)

Our 4th bedroom is an office/adult den. It’s on the same floor as our master and has it’s own full bath, which is the guest bath. We currently also have a guest room on the 3rd fl (next to DS’s room) but that will become a bedroom if and when baby #2 happens.
In 6 months we have had 1 overnight guest, and if we have a second kid I am not going to be too interested in hosting overnight guests so I will be fine with losing the guest room.

We no longer have a guest room because we moved to a much more expensive area, but now we're on the other side of the country so we've had overnight guests probably 30+ days this year! We're definitely missing the extra space!

Ours is the everything-hot-mess room. It's part office, part craft room (which is built into a large walk in closet), part workout room, part dumping ground for all the outgrown clothes and mess that we don't want to deal with. It sounds like a big room from that description, but yea, it's not lol

We have 4 bedrooms and 2 boys. The boys each have their own rooms, we have our master, and I'm currently sitting in the smallest bedroom which is my office. I work from home 2x/week, and also like to read and crochet. So the office is my "woman cave". I've made the colors super spa like, have my desk, have decorated it to my taste with a bookshelf filled with my books. I have a corner where my yarn bag is and I like to crochet in here. I would say that it could eventually double as a guest room, but I sort of don't want to give up my cozy space!

@aprild: We just built a four bedroom house and we have one son. He has his own room and attached bath. We have a master and attached bath. We also have a guest suite with a bath but we often have guests so we planned it that way. The last bedroom is an office for my spouse who works from home a lot. We don’t have a playroom but someday we may finish the basement!
I can’t decide which I want more.
