How long did you stay for?
Did you go back to the hospital after you were released?

My OB suggested I be admitted on March 12th because the meds I was on wasn't working and I was still throwing up. I was in the hospital for just 24 hrs. I was given meds and fluids by IV. Then moved to oral meds.

Well, the oral meds have been working but I skipped a dose and now I'm nauseous and can't take my anti nausea meds. I threw up the pills this morning. Nauseous all day and I'm afraid to take the pills if it's going to make me throw up again.

I do have anti nausea meds that are suppositories but when I last used them they didn't work.

I'm not throwing up. The hospital gave me a list of foods to eat after throwing up. Toast, crackers.

Wondering what I should do next.

I go in for fluid and iv meds whenever I can't take the oral for 2 doses - as soon as I have missed two I can't get back under control. One little trick that works well to get me back on track is I can take chewable or liquid gravol (dramamine I think in the States) wait for 15 minutes, then try the meds. If that fails, then I go in. I also wouldn't eat anything until you had the meds and feel a bit better, unless there's something that would actually help the nausea. I find eating when nauseaus is a great way to develop more food aversions, lol.

Oh, and I have an elaborate timer system to make sure that I don't miss doses - it's really important to not miss doses even when you're having a good day because it's easy to downward spiral.

I went in whenever I couldn't keep doses down. They said if I couldn't keep down a Popsicle, I should go in (this was after more than 18 episodes of vomiting every sip I took). Fluids by IV helped the most, but zofran sometimes took the edge off. I lost 10 lbs in the first tri.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I know you don't want to complain because you are so thrilled to be pregnant, but don't feel like you have to keep mum about it. It sounds so rough!

@Rockies11: ugh! I don't like chewable meds. I'm pretty finicky with the pills I do take. Yeah, when I was released from the hospital they said could I taper off the meds in few days. When I missed my dose I was out of the hospital for 9 days. Once you miss a dose, it really is a downward spiral.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks. After posting this message, this morning, I decided to call my RE to see if they will see me to do a IV with zofran. But they called me back and told me that I should call my OB.

So just heard back from the OB, she wants me to try the suppository and see if that helps. I asked her when I should go back to the hospital and she said if I can keep any food or water down. So now I know. Just keep trying the meds I do have.

@bluestriped bee: Oh my gosh, this sounds awful! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I hope you're able to take your meds and keep them in soon!

@bluestriped bee: what meds are you taking that they suggested tapering? I've only ever heard of that for steroids, and even that is controversial where the HG is ongoing.

A friend of mine had a pump on her body! If you keep having problems, it did help her out a bit to have a constant dose.

A few hours for two IVs and monitoring. They told me the IV goes straight to your blood stream, but somehow I started throwing up uncontrollably mere minutes after the second IV. So, they gave me a shot of Zofran in my thigh, and it made me very sleepy. Now I take Diclegis and Zofran every 8 hours, and they told me to go ahead and take another Zofran in between doses of it gets really bad. They told me that if I didn't gain weight over the next three days they would admit me for the weekend. This happened at 20 weeks when I went to the ER for HG. I threw up so much I stopped breathing. Now that they found a combo of meds that help, I don't get sick as often. I'm thinking of you, and hope you get some relief soon. I know it's rough.

and to contextualize - I am on the max dose of diclegis, reglan, and zofran and have been since I was hospitalized at 6 weeks for fluids. It's mostly under control, although I had two more hospitalizations for fluids and IV meds at 22 and 26 weeks. This is my second HG pregnancy - my first I was on way less meds, and was much, much more sick and miserable.

@Rockies11: They really didn't use the word tapering. I just asked when I would know to stop taking the meds... Like if my m/s got better.

I've taken diclegis and liked it but threw up the night time dose after 5 days or so. Then I tried zofran (chewable/dissolvable... Hated the taste.) but that worked for 2 days. Then I was put on phenergen suppository and that worked for a few days. Then I was admitted to the hospital and given zofran and reglan by IV. I converted to the oral version. I hated taking pills but the combo worked. Though, my stomach was always upset. (Is that normal?)

Since I'm having trouble with oral meds, I was told to try the suppository again. Maybe I can take phenergen (one dose) enough to allow me to start taking my oral meds again ( zofran (oral, reglan and a acid reducer). I'll make sure to keep up on my meds this time.

@blackbird: a pump on your body?!? That actually sounds like a good idea! I hate taking oral meds and would rather prefer an IV dose of meds.

@bluestriped bee: in the States they can do pumps for zofran and reglan, or they can give you the meds through a PICC line. Med delivery and meds work different for everyone, so it's just a matter of playing around with different combinations and delivery methods until you find what works for you. You can take zofran, reglan, and diclegis together - I think the only one you can't take with diclegis is phenergan, since they're both anti-histamines. To learn more about meds and what works for other people, the HER foundation is great (helpher.org) and there's a closed FB group just called Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) that I find useful too! Even with all my medication working properly and no vomiting, I still feel sick, have lots of food aversions, and real trouble with food smells too. For most people (80 percent), it goes away around 18 to 20 weeks. Mine gets better at that point, but my only real cure is delivery.

ETA: HER foundation if you email them will also point you in the direction of doctors that specialize in HG in your area. They've been a real lifesaver for me this pregnancy!

Oh, I just realized that one of my meds is suppose to be taken every 6 hours. I though it was zofran but I looked last night and Reglan is every 6 hr and zofran is every 8. So I've been good with taking meds every 6 hours. Last night and today, I feel much better. Just had a minor freak out when I thought I left my other two meds at home. Luckily, I found it. Phew.

@Rockies11: I'm cautiously posting. Knock on wood I don't jinx it. So so far at 11w4d, I'm feeling much better. Yesterday was a good day and today seems to be going well. When did you start stopping your meds. When did you know you were over your sickness? At this point, it might just be a fluke but I could have another bad day like this past Monday. I don't want to stop my meds and feel sick again.

I wouldn't stop taking meds yet. I never stopped completely, but I did start taking less and less as the pregnancy went on. I was very sick until 20 weeks and then a more manageable sick until I delivered at 27 weeks (unrelated to hyperemeis.) I'm so glad things are looking better for you! I will keep my fingers crossed that it keeps up!
