I am 2 months postpartum with 2 nurslings. You do produce colstrum - as I understand it, the body works to produce for the youngest baby. The advice I was given in the hospital was to always make sure the baby ate first. This seemed sensible at the time, but it didn't really work in real life. My toddler went off solids and started nursing full time. She nursed more than my newborn. It was a nightmare. After about 6 weeks, I weaned her to only eating right after she wakes up in the morning. And then I was super engorged, and the baby was choking from fast flow, etc. I don't think that's a normal thing though. So pros: get to keep a close nursing relationship with a toddler, toddlers are efficient at nursing so they're really good at taking care of engorged breasts when your milk comes in. Cons: in my case, it was literally all we did because one or both were always eating. I was hungry and exhausted all the time, and just kind of burned out. Because my toddler was nursing so much, she started to nurse again in public, and I am a big hippie about nursing but I drew the line at tandem nursing with a toddler in public. Then she would throw a tantrum and cry and hit, etc. Anyway, in my case, it was sort of a fail! Maybe other people have better stories. My toddler has a high needs personality.

ETA: from a physical standpoint - like enough milk produced, able to feed them at the same time, etc. it was a complete success, though.

My milk dried up, but I still nursed DD until DS was born and tandem nursed for 8 months.
My milk came in by day 2 and DS definitely got colostrum.

I always pumped for/nursed DS first and then nursed DD. I did have to nurse both at the same time a few times though
having a nursing toddler really helped with engorgment issues! Good luck!

I found out I was pregnant on my DS 10 month birthday. I nursed as long as I could but pretty much dropped the boob around 13 months (4 months preg) because I dried up. I think my boobs were ready for my 2nd child though because it was and has been such a breeze. Still nursing at 16 months.

I nursed until the day DD2 was born and just figured I would tandem nurse. But as soon as we got home from the hospital and DD1 saw the new baby nursing, she decided she was done. She never asked to nurse again! She was 19 months old.
