If it was coming up on six months in your freezer and you knew you would ultimately use the stash, but not quite yet...what would you do? Pitch it? Buy a deep freezer to extend the life? Something else?

I would keep it and do the smell/sniff taste once it was defrosted - I wouldn't just toss it nor would I spend money on a deep freezer

I would rotate it. Feed the "expiring" milk to LO and bank some fresh stuff. Or ask around to see if a friend has space in their deep freeze.

I did a rotation. LO took 3 4oz bottles (until 9m, when he dropped in favor of solids) so I froze in 3oz portions and would make an oz of each bottle frozen milk each day. I've heard of others freezing their Friday milk and using their oldest frozen for Monday but my LO was a little finicky about frozen milk so I mixed fresh and frozen.

I would try to rotate it in and use it and bank the fresh milk. or, if you have like an insane amount frozen (i had sooo much) I would donate.

I'd donate anything I didn't think id use- I did it last fall. Through Human milk for human babies.

The problem is that I can't use it immediately...she is having a hard time taking bottles that are 3-4 oz. I'm hoping gradually she will take more and then I could use my older stash and rotate through, but--not sure how long it will take for her to take more in her bottles.

Lol, I used milk from the back of our regular freezer that was almost a year old with no issues. Lots of research made me feel fine about it, but I'm crazy like that

@matador84: could you split a frozen bag into two smaller bottles once it is thawed?

@matador84: how much milk are you talking? I have the same six month thing coming up but it's only like five bags. But couldn't you thaw it and split the bottles then?

I would make a post on Human Milk 4 Human Babies for anyone who needed some! I have some milk that's about to expire and that's what I'm going to do.

I would use the stash and freeze fresh milk, and sniff test any additional milk before deciding to throw away. I have broken many breastmilk storage rules and DS has never gotten sick - I think the 3 mnth freezer rule could be an extremely cautious one, so I'd definitely sniff and taste before dumping.

Donate or toss. I don't see the point in giving Milk that old in high quantities since the composition changes over time to meet their needs.

@matador84: this might seem strange, but I give it to my 2 yr old DS to drink if I'm not going to use it in time!
