So normal! My 20 month old does the same thing. She'll start to do something she's not supposed to do, look back at me, looks back at the thing, and then looks at me again with a grin and then does whatever it is she's not supposed to do

We only 2 months ahead of you (DS is 18m) and he does the same thing! He doesn't bite, but he will smack me in the face and giggle when I tell him no, or that's not nice. Any time we tell him not to do something he laughs, or has a tantrum now (they just started). It's so frustrating!!!!

I think, at least I hope, it's normal toddler behavior.

I think it's pretty normal toddler behavior. She's testing your limits and boundaries.

I know you didn't ask for what to do, but I think what to do about unwanted behavior is the logical next question. From my own experience, we started implementing discipline as soon as it was warranted. For us, it's a time out or a trip to the corner. These two things have been very successful with my son. I think consistency in your reaction or with the "punishment" is key to establishing and maintaining the rules. .

@tinyperson: this describes my LO to a "t" when he crouches down near the dog's food bowl while she's eating, and grabs a nugget out to eat. after looking at me, judging how long it would take me to reach him to remove the offending object from his hand, he quickly pops it in his mouth with a smile.

I agree that it's normal. My LO loves to push limits. Loves it. She is a total master at ignoring direction and we have to discipline quite often for it. It sucks, because some days I feel like I do nothing else but discipline.

I worry all the time about DS being a sociopath! It's usually stuff like you describe or not being able to share w other kids. Ed 14 months.

It's so (annoyingly) normal. Ugh. Used to make my blood boil when D1 laughed her head off at me.

Totally normal! Xander always laughs at me when I tell him no and just continues doing whatever he's doing! Hope it gets better for all of us soon.

@sslm: totally normal, but the other day I did joke to my husband that we need check our kid for 666 on her body somewhere, because *something* has to be triggering this evil streak.

She'll be three in October and I don't know when it ends. I heard 18. Who knows.

Normal....but I also find that I have to say "no" very meanly and kind of loudly and sometimes I clap to get her attention, and then she responds better. If i just say, "no", she laughs and keeps doing it. I've started grabbing her for a time out now when she does stuff she knows she's not supposed to do (take the cat food and put it in the cat's water, for example).....and she hasn't done that in a good week now...or when she stands in her high chair. I hate that sounding mean/forceful is what gets her to listen, but I suppose it's more about tone than the actual word for them. I don't use "that voice" often or for other reasons.

Wow I'm so glad I clicked this thread. DH and I have been worried that DS2 is "bad" also. Apparently I have mommy amnesia because I don't remember it ever being so difficult with DS1.

Definitely not evil That is an age where they like to push limits to see where they are and "practice" good and bad behavior. My 14 month old likes to scratch my arms purposefully and then pet them nicely and kiss them as if she is practicing being nice. It's all a part of learning, I think Usually she listens if I say no but sometimes she gets that gleam in her eye and a smirk and keeps doing whatever she was doing while looking at me as if it is a game

Absolutely normal. Just a young toddler testing boundaries. I Also felt that I had to clap or say no loudly our more manly than I wanted to get her attention.

Totally, totally normal My LO can be the sweetest girl on the planet one minute and the next she is trashing the house and doing every single thing I've ever told her not to with the wickedest twinkle in her eye, just to see what I'll do. She recently learned the word "dangerous" because I say it about 10 million times a day when she is running wild. Now she likes to say it while doing her most dangerous stunts ever. Jumping off the coffee table while yelling "dangerous, weeeee". Sigh.
