I'm horrified by what they're doing. I think this is partially a result of pulling the troops out too soon, but I'm not sure what the best thing to do would be. I'm not sure airstrikes are going to cut it though. I do think more should be done...

Pardon my ignorance! I thought they were tied together. Whoops! I'll look into it and let you know what I think.

@MrsMccarthy: I mean... Someone is backing them and financially supporting them. Also- as a group that allegedly came out from al-Qaeda, yet is denounced by them and they are attacking other Muslims rather than attacking Isreal. It would seem to be Isreal isn't 100% out of this. That being said, there's be no way in hell the US would attack Isis if truly Isreal was funding them (yet again no Israelis are fighting, only funding). So who knows. It's all a mess.

@CupQuakeWalk: yes in looking into it see that is the source of my confusion. Those implications.

I still don't feel like I am informed enough to say much more than that I am sickened and horrified by what is taking place. I do worry that US involvement in past situations has been so corrupt and done nothing but embolden such terror groups. It hurts my heart to think of such suffering taking place without consequences.

ISIS is terrifying. I don’t know what we should do.

They’re well funded (who wouldn’t be after stealing, by some reports, up to $400 M in cash!), and extremely well organized. They are not just sects of terrorists, they have taken over infrastructure and government; collecting “taxes” on businesses and becoming intertwined in the economies of different areas in Iraq. So, it’s going to be hard to you know, just go in and clean house (even if that were on the table, and the right choice).

Why would Israel fund ISIS? I’m missing the “upside” for Israel?

I do think that we (the US, I mean) bears some responsibility for what’s going on there now. Our actions in the Middle East in the past decade, and beyond have consequences. I feel like there is even less understanding (or care to understand) about ISIS than there was/is to understand Al-Qaeda; and ISIS definitely feels to me to be much, much more well organized and centralized than Al-Qaeda.

@Mrs. High Heels: HONY should be willing Pulitzers’. It is simply moving, honest, unbiased and amazing real-life reporting.

ISIS is an f-ing disaster. They are so, so dangerous. And o me, they are even more dangerous because the international.community has ignored them for SO. LONG. And there is a huge problem, because this is not just about defeating them in Iraq, but rather trying to figure out what to do about Syria, which has been a breeding ground for extremists for years. We need a strong international response to these people, and we need it now.
