I'd love to build a table, but for now we have a table that belonged to my husband's granny. It's not my style but he loves it. I'd suggest going to a secondhand store or the Habitat Restorefor something durable and cheap.

We have a hand me down set from my parents but once the boys are older I want something like this.

@Foodnerd81: the bench is amazing for kids! We also have a bench (my husband made ours and drilled holes in it so we could secure our booster seat). It's easy to clean and you can squeeze lots of kids on it when you have friends over.

@Foodnerd81: I think it just depends on your child, and the expectations you set for their behavior. I nanny for a family with a bench, and the kids are terrible on it. They stand up, they climb on each other, and over each other and fall off the darn thing. (Note they are 4 and 5. It's better now but was bad when they were 2 and 3). When im there the have to sit in their knees or bum, but their parents don't have that rule at other times, like when they are playing Legos or a game etc.

We have a PB table that we bought on Craigslist and my parents' old chairs with it. We also have a bench that DH built that's not out right now, but probably when the kids are bigger.

We need a new table and chairs, I think we're going to go with a smallish round table likely made of white laminate up top and with wooden legs. Then for seating, we need 2 chairs (the other 2 sides of the table have built in banquette seating) and I will likely go with those wider stools with the long rectangle seat, rather than those traditional round ones just so the chairs aren't in the way.

We got a really nice round pedestal table from goodwill for $30 when we staged our house. The base needs to be painted, but it's nice and sturdy and easier to sit at than our drop leaf (there's always a leg in the way)
