@rpparker: I have never heard of general anesthesia being used for a LEEP procedure.

@rpparker: I had one when I was young--years before TTC. My guess is that it will depend on how much is removed, the results, and how you heal. I don't think it automatically means you can't TTC, but I would try not to worry too much until you have more information. Eta: and definitely no more Dr. Google!

They're putting you under for a LEEP?? That seems... excessive. Is there a reason she needs to do that besides personal preference? Is it a huge or deep patch of abnormal cells? That would give me pause.

I had a LEEP in 2009 so before kids, I was terrified beforehand but it was no big deal, barely any recovery, and carried 2 kids to full term with no issues. I always thought they might need to do a cerclage but that wasn't necessary. I'm thinking that if you DID get pregnant that soon after a LEEP, that might be their strategy at that point. But I guess I don't know. I didn't have my 1st kid until 4 years after the LEEP.

I was still in college, so nowhere near TTC, but I remember the doctor telling me at the time that because of the location of my lesion (the inner lip of the cervix), it was possible I'd never be able to maintain a pregnancy. Even though I wasn't even considering TTC at the time, I knew I wanted kids, so I completely freaked out. My aunt (who was a nurse in L&D) assured me that a) that doctor was an asshole and b) if there was any risk they would just do a cerclage and sew me shut.

So it COULD be that they are being cautious and recommending a year to lower the risk of preterm dilation. That would be my guess.

Also, FWIW, I went under general anesthesia for my LEEP.

ETA: When I DID get pregnant, it was 10 years after the LEEP was performed. I had bi-weekly ultrasounds from 13-26 weeks to monitor my cervix. At 26 weeks they saw no risk of preterm dilation, so they stopped the ultrasounds.

General seems like crazy overkill with unnecessary risk for a LEEP unless you have extenuating circumstances. I used to do them and they were done in the office just with local numbing for your cervix and most women did fine. Good luck!

I was also put under general for mine. I told the OB I wanted kids one day and she was very careful not to take off more than she needed to.
I was monitored biweekly during pregnancy until 26 weeks.

Our office recommends a minimum of 6 months before TTC as our baseline recommendation. The physician sometimes changes that to more or less time based on the location and amount of tissue removed.

I'm also pretty baffled by the idea of doing a LEEP under general. We do them in our office, in the regular exam room with local anesthesia (lidocaine) and some ibuprofen. Our patients do fine. General seems like a lot of unecccesary cost, prep, and risk for a quick and relatively painless procedure that doesn't otherwise require an OR.
