D is 15 months. He has a slew of words in his vocabulary, but doesn't really "finish" his words. So he says book, but it comes out "booh." Duck comes out "duh," as does dog. Cat comes out "cah." Etc etc. We see his pediatrician next week, so I'll certainly address it with her then, but just thought I'd ask around here. Anyone have experience with this?

My LO didn't really have more than mama and dada till after 16 months, and now she's saying quite a few words, but she doesn't finish the ends of them either. I don't think it's an issue — the checklist we go through at our well visits have all said words don't have to be clear.

I would not be concerned at 15 months - He will learn all the sounds as he gets older - I think he is doing great!

My LO is 16 months and talks very similarly. At this age if they use the same sound to identify the same thing consistently, it's a word. Pronunciation doesn't become a real concern until later. They are still developing the ability to make all the sounds in the alphabet. For example your LO may not fully pronounce "book" just because he doesn't have the "k" sound yet.

I asked our pediatrician about this at LO's 18 month appt in March. He's got a fairly good vocabulary, but also doesn't finish words (bird is "bir", bus is "buhh", etc.)...or is just very hard to understand (it took me a few days to recognize he was saying "thank you"). She said it was totally normal. I forget what the exact % was, but she said even at 2, they only look for parents to be able to understand about 50-60% of their LO's words. Especially before 2, she only cares that a child is working to acquire language, not how well that language is coming through.

My son is 23 months and still does this. It's still within normal range even at this point for them not to complete words. He still does this with about half of them.

my LO is 17 months and talks like this too. he has a few 2 syllable words, but still not perfect.

I think it's completely normal! It's more the comprehension of what things are and then verbalizing, even if the pronunciation isn't correct. A does the same thing with certain words and doesn't end then with hard consonant sound like they call for sometimes.

Yes, normal. My LO has a lot of words at 19 months but they're not pronounced clearly at all. The other day in the park he went crazy saying "puh-ee-ka! puh-ee-ka!" We couldn't figure out what he was talking about until we saw a "police car" across the way.

My LO is the exact same way at 18 months..all of his words are just the beginning sound. He's got about 50 words or so, but "bahh" is book, ball, bath, bird, bulldozer, etc depending on the context! The only FULL word he has is bus (where he actually pronounces the s at the end) and that was only after he heard one of his little friends say "bus". I figure it will come in time.

I would only be concerned if he is not using the ending sounds in other speech. Like, in your example of duck, if he's using the K sound to start words, I wouldn't worry. If he's not, I'd mention it to the ped.

Very normal. Everything was "dah" or "bah" to her at that age. They'll eventually get to the whole word, and you'll be amazed.

Totally normal. S has done this since about 15 months and will still do it with a lot of words at 19 months. As he's getting older and we pronounce things a bit more clearly for him, he's starting to finish his words. But bird is still birrrr and toast is still toaaass without the t at the end.

@littlebug: At your LO's age, this is a typical speech pattern. As children develop speech, they go through phonological processes, which basically means they simplify adult speech patterns. What you are referring to is Final Consonant Deletion, and this is a normal part of speech development. This particular process tends to disappear by age 3. As a speech therapist, I would work with a child, and try to correct this, after the age of 3. In the mean time, when your LO says a word without the final consonant, just repeat it back with an emphasis on the sound so they are hearing it from you. As someone mentioned above, it's quite possible the K sound isn't developed yet. The K and G sounds develop around the age of 3. It's quite possible that your LO would substitute a T for K anyways at their age, which is also a typical phonological process.
Here is a link to a chart that lists the phonological processes and when you can expect them to disappear. Up until that age, I wouldn't provide therapy to a child displaying those PPs because it's just a normal part of development. If I had a kindergarten student that continued to call a "book" a "buh", he'd be flagged for therapy.

If you notice certain sounds consistently missing, I'd consider getting his hearing tested. Hearing loss can affect just high frequency or just low frequency, meaning that a child will hear some of the word, but not all of it, which leads to them consistently dropping the same sounds, because they just can't hear it.
