We sold our home but haven't found a new one yet so almost everything is going in to storage. We will stay with my in laws till we find something. I'm a bit overwhelmed by packing and wondered when others packed how many boxes did you have? We have a small three bedroom but it's my husband and I plus our three kids. So lots of toys, crafts, clothes ( live in nj so all four seasons) outdoor toys etc. I'm wondering if I should be getting rid of more stuff than I am.

Is the item worth less than $30?You can adjust the thresholds but if you haven't used it, it can be replaced easily for not much cost, then get rid of it!

Following!! We are packing up our house and moving to an apartment 1/3 of the size. Overwhelmed.

@T.H.O.U. good idea with questions. I think it will help with packing my stuff. Kids toys maybe not, i know out of sight out of mind but I think I inherited pack rat gene and I have trouble letting go.

We moved from a two bedroom and ended up with around 50 boxes, a lot of them small though. Heavy stuff like books I prefer in really small boxes (I kept from Amazon deliveries). Kitchen and bigger stuff/toys fit great into medium sized boxes, and for clothing I preferred to fill our empty suitcases before boxes. And definitely take the opportunity to purge. For example, I decided that I didn't want any more plastics in the kitchen, and got rid of 90%. I kept a few things "just in case" but ending up tossing most of them too when I unpacked.

@threeplusme: Yes, we do a toy rotation with the kids so its a bit harder there.

I don't think I have ever moved with less than 30 boxes. This last time, it was enough to fill a bedroom, so at least 75 boxes, mostly small ones, though.

When we moved our 2 bedroom 900 sqft apartment (family of 3) we had about 40 boxes and we are not really "stuff" people. When we moved most recently (about 1700sqft and family of 4) we had about 60-70 boxes.
