I'd really like to do NIPT this time around, but I assume insurance won't cover it -- I'm 31 and not high risk. If you had NIPT done without insurance coverage, how much did it cost? It seems to fluctuate wildly. Also, how did it work? Was it your doctor's office that told you the amount and charged you, or did you need to contact the testing company directly? I'll obviously ask at my first appointment, but it's not until the 30th and I'm curious

For my DD (who is now 15ish months, so this was 2 years ago), it was about $250 for the bloodwork before they processed my insurance. I had to pay the testing company directly.

My doctor's office told me the testing company would not charge me more than $199 if insurance didn't cover. My insurance did not cover it but the testing company never sent me a bill. This was about 3 years ago.

You can definitely get the testing co to take it down from the crazy high prices but everyone seems to hear a different answer based on what your ob says and how hard you push them (they may have a negotiated rate with your ob but you still pay the testing co). I think $200-350 is a pretty good range to expect but you can call the testing co they use in advance of your test and ask.

Well....my bill said it would be $995. Thankfully insurance covered it.

@bhbee: thanks, I think I will figure out what company my OB uses at our eight-week appointment, and then call them directly to ask for details.
@mediagirl: Yikes, yeah, I'm a little nervous because I've heard stories (I think even on here) about people being told it "wouldn't be more than $200" or whatever, and then they get a bill for $1000. That would really suck

I am 33 and NIPT was not covered by my insurance. I got the info/codes from my provider and then called my insurance provider to ask/confirm. They let me know my out of pocket amount for that testing would have been $650. We declined.

We were told the max would be $200, however the bill will initially be FULL price, and you will have to call to inform them of the $200 max. I'm so glad they warned me that the bill will arrive like that, or I would have had a heart attack at the $3000 bill! They did honor the $200 price after calling.

@MrsSCB: I see no one else has said this, but my strong impression was that it very frequently IS now covered even if you're not AMA. Maybe it's a matter of how good your insurance is. If that's not the case, I've still never heard of anyone having to pay more than 300-400 tops. Probably one of those annoying things where you just have to do your homework and navigate a bunch of automated phone trees

@MrsSCB: even if your insurance “covers” it you may be able to get a lower price. They billed my insurance $13k (!!), insurance said I owed $690 or so (since we have a high deductible plan), I told them (natera - panorama test) that I’d been told I could pay the cash price and when I pushed they offered me $350. I probably could have pushed further if I’d been willing. The nice bonus is my insurance assumed I paid $690 and counted it toward my deductible. So if you’re willing to call and argue you can make it work.

My OB's office has a deal with one of them that if it's not covered by insurance, you pay $100. They billed my insurance for $7000, none of it was covered, and I never got a bill.

I also assumed mine wouldn’t cover it. I was 32 and not high risk but it actually was covered 100%. Maybe you’ll get lucky too!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but just in case anyone goes searching...
I finally got my bill from Natera for the Panorama NIPT. Two weeks after the baby was born, mind you. They billed insurance around $8,000, which was denied in full because I am not AMA. Natera then billed me directly for $1,590, and gave me a "propt pay discount" of $1,341, so I ended up paying $249 for the test.

@BadgerMom: @skinnycow: that happened to me too. I took it around 10 weeks pregnant and didn’t get the bill until after my son was born!!! It was like 5k but then we got a $600 check from my insurance for it. So I called the NIPT (I think it was harmony. Can’t remember) company and they said to just send them the check and they would send us an updated invoice for the $200 we agreed upon. We never got another invoice from them. So ended up paying zero out of pocket.
