I thought this was interesting!
I've really resisted the princess thing until very recently, but Olive is so into them that I've decided to embrace it. Like the author we also live in an ultra liberal, diverse neighborhood and I hope she doesn't grow up thinking she needs a prince charming!
Are there any little girls out there who are not into princesses (I never was and a lot of girls weren't when I was growing up but it's very different now.)

I thought Frozen was interesting. Anna was the one with a prince but Elsa was just as popular if not more popular. My 3 year old wants the magic that comes out of her hands and to dress up.

My LO is not at all interested, but she's still young (nearly 3). I'm happy because I loathe the princess thing, but I am sure she will eventually be into them and I'm going to have to get over it.

I'm in the same boat. I never played with princesses or barbies as a kid But my daughter loves pinks and purples. She likes princesses but also likes traditional boys things like superheroes. She likes elsa because she's pretty and also because she has powers so I think she has a good balance between wanting to be girly and strong. I'm okay with that.

I've always enjoyed the Disney princess movies, however I hate "products" with marketing on them. However, I've fully embraced them as it makes my 2 1/2 year old light up. Her princess bubble bath, Sofia the first blanket, ect. I've fully embraced her love of the sparkle/princess stuff. well besides clothing, I still resist, and she only has what MIL/my mom have bought her and those are her favorites.)

Aw that's cute I feel like the concept of prince charming can easily be counteracted with the message kids receive otherwise. I'm big on embracing what your kid is into, no matter what it is.

@blackbird: I agree. Which is why we are having a Mickey bday party and she had Minnie shirts (which I am not a fan of, but at least I can control how Minnie they are!)

That article is brilliant. Both my kiddos are into princesses, but only because of the singing. If there is singing, they are in love, and I don't think it has anything to do with how they look or a gender bias thing.

I was really into my Barbies when I was a kid, I am sure my mother thought it was ridiculous, but I grew out of it and don't have any long lasting issues from having a Barbie branded sleeping bag as a kid...so I am fine with whatever my son happens to like.
For the record, he is obsessed with Doc McStuffins and Sophia the First.

It just has so much going on. sequins, tulle, it fits her weird...ha. and yes that's an attached 'jacket' thing

my DD is a HUGE disney princess fan, I on the other had was a tomboy. I would wear pants under my skirts and dresses when I was small and even bought a change of clothes when I had to wear a dress to a party. I dont know how I got stuck with our girly girl
I embrace it since we get to go to disney every year now

I wasn't obsessed with princesses when I was little, but I did watch all the popular disney movies of the time and used to pretend to be Ariel in the pool. I do think I had a prince charming fantasy, but I don't think it really hurt me in the long run because I found a wonderful partner in my husband. I think the things you learn about life from your parents make a way bigger impression on who you become.

Love the article! I never had a princess obsession: I liked Disney princesses fine, and dressed up as a couple of them for Halloween, but that was it. It never occurred to me to have a Prince Charming obsession. My daughters are allowed to love princesses, or mad scientists, or anything they want to. I do cringe when someone calls my daughters, "princess," though. Why assume she wants to be one because she's a girl? I hate that.
