With DS we introduced a pacifier right away in the hospital. He had a strong sucks reflux, and he was using me as a human pacifier. He used a paci until he was 2. DD. Is five days old and we have not yet introduced a paci. I wanted to make sure my milk was well established, and luckily it came it sooner and more plentiful this time--but this little babe also has a strong urge to suck and even after a good nursing session MOTN will just want to suck. Sounds like we should consider the pacifier--or is this just a new baby phase? And if we do, are there any pacis out there that have smaller/shorter nipples? I feel like most pacis don't really mimic my nipples but if we give her a paci I'd rather it be closer to my anatomy.

Try the nuk or mam. My nursing loving babe liked those better. I wish they would make a bottle and a paci with a shorter nipple!!

Like @mrssrs said, we had good success with Mam. DS likes those (he's 3.5 months now). We only use them now at bedtime/naptime, in the car, if he's upset - not just during the day whenever. He doesn't seem super attached to it or needing it all the time, but it does help. It's a good tool in the arsenal. He took a Soothie halfheartedly as a NB but wasn't really into it. I don't regret it! He is EBF with no problems.
And the good thing about the Mam pacis (which have sort of a short/flat nipple) is that you can get them in different sizes for different ages. I think he took the Mam paci so well because we got the "newborn" size (0 to 2 months) and it was really small for his little mouth. Now he uses the 0-6 month size, and they also make 6+ month size. We also use the Mam bottles for when he has to take a bottle and he has no problem with it at all - I think b/c he was used to the paci and it's the same kind of bottle nipple.

My nursing addict baby liked the nuk but didn't actually take to it until 3-4 mo old.

My newborn (just a week old) will take the mam pacifier and it seems to help. He's nursing like a champ, but is happier with something to suck to go to sleep. We tried soothies and nuk as well-- he was ok with soothies, but couldn't keep them in his mouth. Nuk was flat out rejected.

My DDs loved the mam pacifiers but would mostly spit out others. My oldest and middle child were done with the pacifier around 3/4 months. My youngest still uses it at night at 17 months.

I really feel that if latch is good and milk is in, the risk of confusion is low. the LCs at our hospital really supported paci use after that stage and we started around 10 days old. They also reduce SIDS risk while sleeping. Also, our LO has always liked the NUK type. Never took to Soothies or the gummie hospital type.

My guy didn't learn to keep a paci in until 2 months old, and he never really took to them. Mams worked best for us.

She loved avent. I introduced it at about 3 weeks. I took it away at about 4 months. It was when we were transitioning out of the swing for naps and into the crib for naps and night sleep. So I figured I would just do allllll of the changes at once. It worked fine. No paci dependence. I did end up putting a knotted angel dear lovey in her crib which made a world of difference for her self soothing.

My LO loved the soothie pacifiers, but she didn't really take to it until about 2 months old.

I waited about a week to introduce pacis to C, she loved to comfort nurse. She never took to pacifiers- I tried every brand because I got so tired of being a human paci, but no luck, she hates them. Will half heartedly try with this one again, but it is nice to have never had to take the paci away and make that transition.
