What does a visit to the pediatrician usually run you before you meet your deductible? What about if you have some sort of test (like flu)?

Sick visits are around $100 plus any labs. Those can be all over the map. Thankfully we haven't needed much more than a visit so far.

Ugh...our last visit was so expensive! About $400 for a breathing treatment, flu test, and sick visit. She'd had the flu shot....I wish I'd refused the test. It was $120. I had no idea it cost that much! (New insurance)

Our well visits are completely covered and for any sickness items, unless an emergency, we go to a minute clinic. Saves us a ton of $$ - only about $75 each time. Plus, it's quicker and we don't need an appointment.

Wow! I feel lucky. Her old one was $65 for a sick visit and her new one is $75. My insurance (Aetna) has a cost estimator online so you can shop around.

@Ms. RV: Interesting! So Aetna posts the amount that each doctor/practice bills them for particular services/procedures so insureds can see that info? I don't think I've seen that done before.

@Ms. RV: Wow, wish we had that!
It's so frustrating not to know costs up front so you can shop around. I mean, I wouldn't go into a restaurant without knowing the price range...I have no idea if this is a standard cost--under our old insurance, we never paid anything, so I got spoiled! I guess I'll call around to some more local peds so I can get a better idea of what's reasonable.

$10 copay. It's not fair that it's so different! That includes everything but the meds.

Woah, I'm feeling grateful for our insurance now! We pay through the nose for it out of DH's paycheck, but pediatrician is 100% covered for well visits, sick visits, labs, vaccines, everything. We've never been billed by our ped, and no copay either.
nectarine / 2243 posts
Hmm our visits typically cost between 60-80 bucks for ped visits before the deductible (which is huge, like 4K huge, but funded fully by DHs job via a HSA)
Well and vaccine visits are covered no charge to us
@babypugs: try calling! I know for smaller private practices they can typically give you an estimate because they tend to do their own billing internally. When I see docs or specialists who operate their own private practices they have a term sheet which more or less lays out what each insurance reimburses for codes. The places where I have NOT been able to get an estimate are practices that are under an umbrella of a large hospital system.

$30 for our copay (sick visits only). Ped bills at $90/visit.
My work does pay 80% of our premiums, copays, everything but typically it is a reimbursement from the company that handles that for my employer. So when I had my C-section in November, I had to pay upfront and then got reimbursed $2,000 just in time for Christmas.

$20 copay for sick visits. No deductible. Well visits are covered. The company I work for has amazing health insurance - so grateful.

Sick visits are $25 LO had a deductible but we haven't met it yet. Labs and such are extra, but shots are free.
My insurance is similar. I am happy this pregnancy will all be in one year.

Our office visit for sick visits is a 55$ copay. We usually get another bill on top of that if they had to have something else done while there. Well checks we don't pay.

It's crazy how these answers are all over the place! I bet we all pay similar premiums, too. I wish the cost of healthcare was more transparent (I guess that's a topic for another thread, ha!).

Wow I feel so lucky!!
$15 copay for sick visits. No deductible. Well visits are covered.

Our well visits and vaccines are completely covered. Sick visits we usually end up paying $85 but that is after insurance has negotiated down the price. Dr usually charges $160-$225 depending on who we've seen and weekends and then insurance doesn't pay any of it and we get billed the $85ish amount.
Eta. We are about the hit our deductible from having a baby and will have to pay a $25 copay then.
pomegranate / 3779 posts
Our last one was ~$120, but now we've hit our deductible.
All insurance plans in the US cover well visits at no cost thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

Also lucky over here! $15 copay, no deductible and well visits are covered. We had to go to the children's hospital ER a few weeks ago and just got that bill - it was only $125 and we even stayed overnight in the ER for observation. Crazy how all over the place it can be!

@babypugs: I dunno I bet some are paying a lot higher premiums!! If I had a low co-pay I'm pretty sure my premiums would be worse.
We pay a lot in deductible share of cost, but insurance since having DS has ranged from (all HSA high deductible plans) 1) $0 premiums bc employer covered 2) $290/mo for DH and DS thru health market insurance, and 3) $110/mo for DH and DS at new employer (mine is separate bc employer covers my premiums)

We just have a $30 co pay for sick visits and well visits are free.

I learned that I have to call the peds office and get their billing code for a sick visit plus their tax ID number and then the insurance company can tell me the cost of a sick visit. I find this ridiculous because they have the information but have created unnecessary stress on people in the form of not knowing. It used to be $20 for a sick visit, well visit is covered.

Our co pay for sick visits is $20 but we pay nothing for well baby check ups and vaccines. So far (knock on wood) we haven't had any hospital visits or anything.

@runnerd: Yeah, I'm sure there's quite a bit of variance, but my premiums are definitely not cheap--not cheap enough to justify the appointment cost, in my opinion!

I pay $30/month in premiums, and $0 for office visits or labs.
