@PinkElephant: I don't believe so? It should have just been Hepatitis B. Can't find her records right now because we just moved and everything isn't where it should be :(. But I definitely just signed off on Hepatitis B.

Just went through the photos DH took, and we actually have a photo of when she got the injection in that spot (just kind of validating for myself that we're not crazy!). She never had a reaction to any of the boosters.

Under side effects that usually do not need medical attention, "Hard lump, redness, swelling, pain, itching, purple spot, tenderness, or warmth at the injection site"

She doesn't particularly show tenderness there, or pain/itching. We'll definitely continue to follow up with her doctors until we get a better answer than "Hmm, that's weird". Thanks bees!

@coopsmama: We first noticed it two months after she was born. DH was the one who put two and two together and realized it was the same site as the injection (http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/red-mark-from-hep-b-vaccination). I've never seen it look like this though. Not sure who to escalate things to if this new ped is a dead end. Dermatologist? I'm starting to worry that maybe it's a tumor?

@coopsmama: thanks mama *hugs*. Sometimes it would turn red if she was screaming/very unhappy, but I don't remember the middle ever turning that color.

With it being hep b, she's actually had that three more times (last time was last February). Not sure if they always put it in the same spot.

@coopsmama: will do ! appointment at 11:30 our time, which is in an hour and a half.

There's a person here at work with a medical background, and she thinks it looks like a staph infection. So maybe at her first vaccination the entry point of the needle/breaking the skin allowed bacteria in? I don't know if it would take that long to have a full fledged breakout, but at least that makes sense to me. I'm going to ask the ped to culture it.

Grasping at straws! DH says it looks the same this morning, if not a little rounder.

So, the new pediatrician (who I really liked, took a lot of time with us) wants us to see a pediatric dermatologist, but she thinks it's something called histiocytosis. She said the injection in the photo was actually the vitamin K shot (@mrbee: , not sure if you want to change the title of this thread for future searches?), and that there's no known relationship that she's aware of between the two, but that the location is indeed suspicious and shouldn't necessarily be ruled out.

As she described it, there's a collection of thousands of cells right there that are releasing antihistamines when it gets agitated (then it gets raised, red ring, pus-y looking). As that wave of histamines dies down it gets back to its more normal appearance of just a red spot. She said she'll have it her whole life, but it should be benign. Again, pending the dermatologist looking at it and confirming.

So thank you, everyone, for commiserating and talking me down off the ledge! Hopefully this continues to have a good outlook.
