I think it makes sense that women having an abortion have the opportunity to donate fetal tissue to research. It also makes sense that planned parenthood is reimbursed for storage and transfer costs.

This is a non-issue.

As @temperancebrennan succinctly explained, it's a non issue. What's disgusting is the reckless attempt to demonize an organization that provides essential health services to millions of people each year at little to no cost.

It's a non issue. The videos are edited so as to make it seem as if PP is selling the tissue, which it is not. It is clear that those who made and issued these videos have an agenda. Furthermore, I find it reprehensible that these people would have posed as journalists when they are not in order to film these videos only to post them with serious edits to make PP seem monstrous.

I find it disgusting no matter how edited the videos are. You can't edit in their tones and attitudes. Hearing them mock "it's another boy!" while dissecting the body parts made me ugly cry.

I think it's a non-issue. Frankly, I'm tired of seeing some of my very right wing friends post the same misinformation about it, over and over. I feel like they are being deliberately obtuse if they refuse to educate themselves about the full video, at least. I've had to hide a few family members over this issue, because it makes me respect them less and I hate feeling that way about my own family. =(

It's not that they have an opinion about it that's different from mine---it's that what they are posting is from far-right-wing "news" and it's not truthful at all, and they are posting about it daily.

I had a cousin post something so dumb about how she didn't have insurance when she got pregnant and wanted to go to PP, but "luckily" her friends told her they would just push an abortion on her, so she avoided going there and saved her baby's life. sigh. PP is not forcing abortions on ANYONE and those kinds of lies are so ridiculous to me. I relied on PP solely from ages 18-22 while I was in college for my gynecological needs and never once was I pressured into anything. I'm so grateful they were there so I could get regular pap smears and treatment for my yeast infections, uti's, etc without insurance.

@AmandaB8: This. And from what I know of industrial meat production, it can get way nasty. Yet I've never met an anti-choicer who is also a vegetarian....

@matador84: Agreed with @truth bombs. Of course I'm not donating my own tissue while I'm alive, either. But after I'm dead, have at it!

It's a nonissue for me as long as moms consented to having the tissue donated. I don't trust the video content but honestly, the attitude portrayed doesn't bother me either. It's tissue and it's what these people do everyday.

This video isn't the way to go about pushing your agenda forward.

@matador84: yeah I don't get the living newborn argument. This isn't a living newborn, it's not even a fetus that would be viable of birthed at that moment in time. How do those compare?

I think as long as patients are aware of the destination of the "tissue" then it is fine. If they are unaware or if the documents they sign are vague - then I think there is a bigger issue.

I find attitude of indifference in the video to the "tissue" to be appalling but then again I do understand (as @AmandaB8: ) that different fields of work are de-sensitized to certain things. However - I am just not so sure how you become de-sensitized to human beings - however I am not in the situation.

@Anagram: I will say - not to be argumentative but I personally have had very concerning experiences at PP in the past - and I was not the only one in my circle of friends who had this experience. While you may have had good experiences with them - which is great - dont discount that others have had some of the horror story experiences that you claim no one has ever had. Of course we all would like to think that each clinic operates under the same guidelines/policies/culture - the reality is that with an organization of that size you will have different levels of care and different experiences depending on where you go. Generalizations on either side (your friend assuming she would be convinced to abort OR you assuming they have never done that to anyone) are dangerous with and organization of thats size.

@Mrs D: While you and I sit here typing on the internet, there are 795 million people starving and 5.5 million children living as victims of human trafficking. We are all desensitized to the perils of humanity.

@Ms.Line: That's really not the same thing at all. @Mrs D was talking about seeing and handling body parts and human tissue. I thought she addressed it very well. Nobody can truly know unless they do it themselves.

@ms.line: I actually find that somewhat offensive. De-sensitized would mean I do nothing and have no feelings towards the struggles of other humans in all the awful situations people around the world find themselves in. Implying that would be making a rather large assumption about me as a person - a person you do not know at all.

@Anagram: what you said is "PP is not forcing abortions on ANYONE and those kinds of lies are so ridiculous to me" - going to the extreme opposite of a happily married woman who is thrilled to be pregnant going in there and referencing the experience she may have as compared to a scared college kid who may want advice/guidance is a large jump. PP sees many women in many different stages/phases of life - and provide great service to I am sure the majority of those people. However - I personally had a negative experience with the coercion I felt from the staff - and I know in my circle of friends I was not alone. I'm not trying to argue - just presenting a different side to the story. You are making generalizations about a HUGE organization and presuming these things never happened - I am simply saying from my perspective and real life experience they do unfortunately happen.

@ms.line: agree to disagree...I take the "we are all desensitized" statement to mean we have no feelings towards these issues. Desensitized to me is not the same as continuing to live and function while these horrible situations exist. Rather it would be mocking or otherwise disrespecting those people, their situation and their struggles.

I've killed many animals in my day for cancer research. I understand how it becomes routine. At the same time there's a level of being desensitized that's inappropriate and can lead to bad things. I've seen it in other researchers (and turned one in that I thought went too far beyond crossing the ethical standards). We had a few Med students get in trouble one year because a faculty member overheard them making fun of their cadaver. I dont think any line was crossed in this video (though Ive only watched a snippet). But becoming overly desensitized is a real issue that can occur and is and should be addressed

The tones/attitudes in the video was what bothered me. I totally get that in these professions, when you deal with these things daily, you have to come up with ways to cope and sometimes joking around, being casual, or being desensitized (at least in the moment) might be needed in order to do your job.

I am not the judge of whether they crossed lines or not, but for me, a normal person with zero ties to the medical field, and being a mommy, that upset me to certain levels.
