I'm so happy it was released in Canada yesterday! I'm having a blast. I grew up with Pokemon so this game is super cool for me. I still play the gameboy games.

Bus ride this morning was very successful, even though the app is still crashing occasionally. Level 3 to level 5 in one commute (plus a little desk time... I'm in range of two pokestops at my desk and people seem to be setting off lures constantly. This is not going to be good for my productivity today.)

@delight: I find that useless too.

@delight: I feel like it worked the first 2 or 3 days that I played, but no longer does.

This game is so dangerous. As I said, I can reach 3 poke stops from my desk, and people kept dropping lures today. I also took a long walk to get to the bank at lunch. I took over a gym (for like, 3 seconds) and leveled from 9 to 13. I...didn't get much work done...

Here's what I've got. Not much water around, so I'm not surprised about many I haven't found.

Still to confused to try even a friendly gym for training! I'm also team Mystic (blue)

But, I caught a Tauros and 2 wild Pigeottos!

I'm still yet to figure out gyms.

    Here are mine so far:

@Jess1483: I think that pink one Clefairy comes out at night. I still haven't tried a gym yet but maybe within a few days I can go. I got this as my secret weapon. This is what Evee evolved to. I am almost on level 10. Slowly but surely over here. Don't get out much.

I don't understand how lures or gyms work... I visit pokestops and collect things and pokemen but that's it.

ETA: Or eggs. And is there any point to catching multiple of the same animal thing or no?

  9. jaguar

    pomegranate / 3764 posts

@LindsayInNY: Eggs are good! Put them in your incubator and then they'll just gain miles as you walk and hatch on their own!

And yeah, good to catch multiples - you can transfer to Oak and get candies for them, which you can train or evolve with!

  10. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@jaguar: See that's all foreign to me - transferring and candies and whatnot! I'm lost!

  11. jaguar

    pomegranate / 3764 posts

@LindsayInNY: Hehe, I've had lots of time to play with it. So if you catch a duplicate Pokemon, you can click on it to see its details... then scroll right down to the bottom under the map where you caught it, and hit Transfer. You'll then get a candy to upgrade or evolve!

  12. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

Look at your Pokemon. Look next to the word 'evolve.' You will see a number- it is the amount of candy you need to evolve to a new similar breed of Pokemon on steroids. Since you only get 3 candy (I think) each time you catch a creature, it will take a lot of catching of the same breed to evolve. To get even more candy added to your candy collection, trade in Pokemon by clicking 'transfer' and you get 1 more baby step (1 candy) closer to evolving. But you lose that Pokemon. So you get 4 candy per Pokemon- 3 for catching and 1 for transferring. Don't transfer your best one. That's the one you want to evolve.

Today's catches while walking around daycare drop off: a Ghastly and a Scyther!

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@jaguar: Ahh! The ghastly was the ONEWHOGOTAWAY for us. Good job! I'm running out of pokeballs! Not enough stops and too many creatures. Anyone else have that problem? I don't have the best aim. LO has to catch almost all of them for me. She usually gets them on the first try.

@808love: My one that I keep missing (only seen twice, and ran away both times) was a Clefairy. *sob*

    bananas / 9227 posts

@LindsayInNY: You can save your duplicates for leveling. If you have a lucky egg (sparkly one you get at level 9), it gives you double XP for 30 mins. If you evolve all your common duplicates that require little candy to evolve, you can quickly level your character.

  17. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@808love: How do I know which one is my best one? I was looking and not all of the same characters are the same (if that makes sense - like HP, etc)

  18. jaguar

    pomegranate / 3764 posts

@LindsayInNY: Usually the one with the highest CPs.

  19. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@SugarplumsMom: I just transferred all those duplicates. Maybe not a good move now lol?

  20. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@LindsayInNY: If you are not sure, just keep both. I usually keep the highest CP or if one has a special power that just sounds cool (like hyperbeam). I'm sure there is some research out there-lol- but I don't care at this point bc I don't want to battle. Also, Transferring is fine, because you are getting candy. JUst don't evolve yet until you get a lucky egg at level 9. Evolving is where you get the extra XP.
@jaguar: wah! I have never seen ghastly again. Look for Clefairy at night. I think it was dusk when I found her. Hopefully she will turn up again.
@SugarplumsMom: I totally saved my egg for that precise moment when I leveled up to 9 and was standing in the big hot spot that everyone gathers at bc of all the creatures and poke stops that are right next to each other. I went to nearly 10 in 15 minutes. Ran out of pokeballs though.

  21. SugarplumsMom

    bananas / 9227 posts

@LindsayInNY: The bright side is they were easy to catch I'm trying to time my egg hatching to coincide with a lucky egg.

@808love: Where I live, there isn't many stops and the closest gym is a drive away -- I'm out of balls and I haven't even tried a lure!

  22. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@SugarplumsMom: I haven't used any lures yet. Maybe I will do that near the water. There is so much action near our town hall everyone gathers there at night. In fact we are having a play date with another poke-family tonight. It just happens to be LOs best friend who was strangely obsessed with Pokemon before this craze even happened.
My main goal is to NOT spend money playing this game. Hehe!

  23. SugarplumsMom

    bananas / 9227 posts

@808love: I'm way too cheap to spend money, but ended up buying some incubators. I refuse to buy balls when they're free ... I just need to get my butt to an actual stop.

I lost out on a Kadabra and a Dugtrio yesterday--I caught them both and the servers went down at that moment (well, those moments)--I was so mad! But I'm close-ish to being able to evolve both anyway.

I have one of my employees testing out an egg theory. I run a carousel and am wondering if riding it will hatch eggs. We have the three poke stops around, and we're going to see if we can figure out how to host an "event' with charging stations, lure drops, etc. We're brainstorming.

I caught on Onix today, and yesterday I evolved Geodude and Mankey, and this morning Eevee into one of the three (I used the trick to choose...I'm excited to catch more Eevee to be able to evolve all three.)

    And I'm officially a nerd...

  25. PawPrints

    pomegranate / 3658 posts

I went for a walk after dinner last night and discovered that our favorite neighborhood park has six pokestops inside it. This is like a 2-block park. People sit there all evening setting out lures. It's like a carnival.

So I made level 9 last night. Do I have this straight, strategy-wise - I should spend some time transferring my duplicates to get more candy, pick out which pokemon I possibly can evolve (starting with highest CP), and then once I'm in that crazy neighborhood park tonight, use my lucky egg to get 30 minutes of super-charged XP and then evolve all my evolvable pokemon and then use the rest of the 30 minutes to catch all the pokemon that come out to the lures. Is that the gist of it?

I don't know if it's because I'm in a pretty nerd-dense city but all the gyms are staked out by crazy-high CP pokemon all the time. It feels pretty daunting that I'd ever be able to get my pokemon up into the 1000s of CP.

Also this morning I encountered a Golbat, and used ALL my pokeballs trying and failing to capture him! Like a hundred pokeballs! I nabbed him like ten times but he escaped every time.

  26. Jess1483

    nectarine / 2641 posts

@PawPrints: That sounds right, strategy-wise. That's what I did the other day and jumped a couple levels.

As for the gyms, I was totally intimidated the first time I tried, but I actually won with pretty lame pokemon. You'll find you have much higher CP when you do some of your evolving, too. You get to put a large number of your pokemon up against a small number of the "defender's" usually, so it's not that hard to beat even a really big defender.

This helped (I saw it posted somewhere...not sure if it already has been here.) http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2016/07/15/pokemon-gos-biggest-secret-type-is-way-more-important-than-cp/#ba1b9e418b05

@Jess1483: I thought you battle one pokemon against another individual. You can do a bunch at one time?

  28. Jess1483

    nectarine / 2641 posts

@PawPrints: I'm not entirely sure I understand how/why, but different gyms (or something) have different ratios. So sometimes it's 1 v 1. The gym I played the other day was 6 (me) on 1 (them), but the one I played today was 1 (me) v. 3 (them), so it's definitely not always 1 v. 1. And then knowing that the type means more than the CP was helpful, too, although I don't generally remember which is which.

@Jess1483: @PawPrints: yup, that Forbes article is what I read where I learned you can use more than one Pokemon to fight. I, too, was intimidated by the CP by some of the Pokemons at nearby gyms.

  30. jaguar

    pomegranate / 3764 posts

@Jess1483: what is the Eevee trick? I only have ever caught her once, so I'm FAR from evolving anyway. 😂

  31. Jess1483

    nectarine / 2641 posts

@jaguar: this explains it. I assume that if you don't do this, it selects one of the three randomly. http://www.technobuffalo.com/2016/07/18/how-to-pick-eevee-evolution-pokemon-go/

@PawPrints: @Jess1483: if you pick a "friendly" gym (one that's the same colored teamed you: blue, red, yellow) you only pick one Pokemon to fight the gym. When you go to a friendly gym you aren't really fighting, you're training. If you beat all the players the gym "levels up". Once a gym levels up you can leave a Pokemon there.

If the gym is a different color, you always get 6 Pokemon to attempt to beat the gym. The gym will have anywhere from 1 to 10 opponents depending on the level of the gym. Every time you fight, the gym gets weaker. If you beat it enough times, you can take over the gym and leave a Pokemon there. If you "own" the gym long enough, you get coins

At least I think this is how the husband explained it to me. We took over a couple gyms. "We" meaning him and he let me leave a Pokemon there

  38. PawPrints

    pomegranate / 3658 posts

@hellocupcake: oh they explains it, I've only been going to friendly gyms.

I made level 10 last night, still haven't used my lucky egg though. And now I got another one from leveling. I wanted to wait and use it when I have more candy. And also there weren't as many lures out at the park last night during my walk .

I did try burning incense for the first time after I was at home. That was great, I got like four I think that popped up in my house. I never get any at home normally.

@PawPrints: Yay, we are at the same level. That's cool to hear the incense worked. The last two times it didn't seem to work for me. @hellocupcake: Thank you so much for explaining about the gyms so clearly! It helped me a lot.

Does anyone have any tips on getting Jiggly Puff? Day/night time? Residential or business districts? I keep looking for him and all I keep getting are zubats and pidgeys.
