We are planning a family Rpadctripnforbthis summer and will be stopping for 2 days in Portland! We haven't been before so where would you recommend staying (area wise) and recommendations for things to do, must try restaurants etc? We are travelling with a 5 and 2 year old, and I will be 25 weeks pregnant.

We went 2 years ago when our kids were 4 and 20ish months. We rented an airbnb in the Sunnyside neighborhood. I really liked Salt and Straw for ice cream and Blue Star Donuts. The OMSI museum was great with the kids. I would start looking for accommodations now. I booked pretty late and was surprised at how expensive everything was, even airbnb (and we stayed 4 or 5 nights).

We just went in April with my DH and 2 boys (3 and 6 years old) for spring break. They loved the OMSI, Multnomah Falls and the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm (may be closed now since the tulips are probably not blooming anymore). We were planning to check out the Oregon Zoo, but it rained that day. Other places to visit are the Portland Children's Museum and maybe the Rose Garden.
Food was delicious there. Salt & Straw, Pok Pok (if you like ehtnic Thai food), Southpark Seafood (best clam chowder I've had), and Tasty N Alder were our favorites.
We stayed in Downtown Portland at the Paramount Hotel. Took public transportation everywhere, but did rent a car for one day to check out Multnomah Falls and the Tulip Farm.

Portland also has a bunch of conveyor belt sushi restaurants which are super fun - especially for the kiddos.
The Old Spaghetti Factory was fantastic, as well.I have no idea about anything else in Portland other than the food.

To me, Portland is a lot about eating!
Blue Star for donuts, Salt & Straw for ice cream, food carts on Alder St (in downtown Portland), Lardo, La Moule
I also love going to Powell's City of Books - it's gigantic and I can get lost in there for hours.

@MsMini: since you are traveling with kids an airbnb may be nice since hotels especially on weekends can be super expensive. Most neighborhoods are pretty walkable that are close in. OMSI is very cool. The Children's Museum and zoo are in the same parking lot. It is for sure a good city. I like going to food cart pods. Voodoo doughnut cas have really horrible hour plus lines- so can salt & straw- but you can just walk to the front of the line and buy a pint.

@lamariniere: we are looking at booking right away! My DH collects Marriott points through work so we will be using those for our hotels! We are lucky his company lets us use the points he collects when he does work travel.
