If you live in Seattle or Portland, does your LO ride a scooter around in the city? Or do you see other kids on them? We are visiting both cities very soon and I'm contemplating packing my 4 yo's Micro scooter so he can scoot around while we explore since we will only have an umbrella stroller for our younger LO and no other transport option for him. He's used to scooting where we live when out and about. I'm wondering if it's logistically plausible, with wide enough sidewalks that are not too crowded. Thoughts?

In Seattle, the sidewalks are wide enough, but some areas (like around Pike Place Market) are WAY too crowded this time of year. Also, Seattle is very hilly and some blocks are really steep, so it probably wouldn't be the safest idea going downhill and would be something of a struggle going uphill. In other areas, like Seattle Center (around the Space Needle) it would probably be okay, though. My DD is too little for a scooter yet, and while I do see kids riding them around our neighborhood, it doesn't seem super common...maybe I just haven't noticed, though. What are you planning to see and do while you're here?
In Portland, I've only been in the area around Downtown/the Pearl District but it's much flatter there. I haven't been on a weekend, but during the weekdays the crowds seemed reasonable. I think the scooter could work there, but again, I'm not that familiar with other parts of the city.

I rarely (if ever?) see kids downtown Seattle on scooters. Too hilly, too crowded, and there are even some cobblestones. I suppose it doesn't hurt to pack it, as long as your kid wont be sad if it doesn't get used much.

In Portland, yes but probably not in Seattle. Seattle is usually crowded and hilly like pp's mentioned.

In Portland it would certainly be plausible although you are unlikely to see other kids on them. Most walk or ride in strollers. Portland is very bike and pedestrian friendly. I agree that Seattle might be more difficult and is certainly more crowded.

@lamariniere: The only are of Seattle that gets crowded is right in downtown and pike place market area. Some neighborhoods are quieter and flatter then others- where are you staying? The scooter would be perfect for hanging around Seattle Center. Downtown Portland is definitely more flat.

We're in portland. It depends on what you're planning to do in portland. You can definitely scoot around within the city. It never really gets too crowded. Outside the city, you may not find adequate sidewalks.

We will only be in Seattle for 2 nights, and probably just visiting the main attractions, so that's good to know about the hills and crowds. We will be in Portland 5 nights and and it sounds like it could work there, so good to know. Maybe I'll just wait until I'm done packing and see if I have room for the scooter since we will be visiting a few other places where he could definitely use it.
